    Hi Luc,

When you mentioned you wanted to add some newsgroups, I didn't think you were planning on gating this many into Fidonet.

I don't think anyone wants to turn Fidonet into usenet. Some people are concerned with the number of newsgroups you have listed so far.

    Some questions:

    1) How many more are you planning on putting on the echolist?

    2) Will bbs users/sysops be able to reply to the newsgroup messages you are gating?

    3) When you say you are filtering the groups, what kind of filtering are you doing?

    Thanks for any information.

    Take care,
    Janis

Nick Andre has run a successful USENET<->Fidonet gate for many many years that doesn't involve the Fidonet backbone. Many of us use Nick for that reason: we don't want Fidonet turning into USENET.

    Agreed there, Sean.

I don't mind some groups being gated, but the list here is growing.

Perhaps Luc will reply shortly and we'll see what he's thinking?

I agree, I don't want Fidonet and Usenet combined. They are two separate networks and remained the same. One main issue I've had over the years with Usenet is so much spam. Fidonet has been a great network and has never needed to be joined with another network to be successful. There are free Usenet (for
now) news servers out there that are separate from ISPs that are available. I cannot believe there are already 20+ newsgroups already in the process of being
added. I don't mind SysOps adding their own message area from time to time but
    this is too much.

    Sincerely,
    Jon Justvig

    * An ongoing debate between Luc Mccarragher and Janis Kracht rages on ...

I don't think anyone (except maybe yourself) wants a wholesale import of usenet
into FIDONet. Listing on the Echolist is one thing (it's international and broad enough of scope to handle your echoes) but putting all of them on the backbone would be time consuming to say the least.

Like Sean mentioned, anyone can set up a feed from you for the desired echoes outside of the Backbone and still keep everyone happy, so why don't we try that
    first?

You're welcome to utilize the Echolist as custom zones did in the past. :)

I recall some time ago that there was a large USENET<->Fidonet gateway in operation on the WWB...then again, memory may be failing me too. :D
