My computer is running Win7, with a virtual box to run WinXP
which I use primarily for reading the echos..

Why can't you migrate the echo activity to Win7?

For example, I've been experimenting with several fine
    point programs since last year:

    https://kolico.ca/fidonet/echos/points/

The way that I read the echos is to download a QWK packet from Maximus.
I then read that packet using BlueWave in my WinXP virtual box. Pretty
much every thing else I want to do with respect to my BBS does run just
fine in Win7, perhaps with some help from a DOS emulator called vDOS. Unfortunately, although BlueWave can run under vDOS, it does not act
quite the same in a way that is critical to me.

I have never used point software, even more than two decades ago when I
was a point before being given a node number.

    So, I am
sticking with Win7 in spite of the fact that MS is dropping
    support for it.

Just because "support" (the constant excuses for security
updates) is stopping from MS, doesn't mean that Win7 will
stop working. Win7/64/32 is a smooth performer.

Understand. And except for that one single thing about BlueWave I have
no problems with continuing to use Win7 for everything else.

I like the ready-to-go feature in Win10 that allows
controlling other screens and redirecting video to
different monitors connected in the network, for example.

I don't see any use of that for me at this time.

If I had my druthers, and if I didn't have to rely on at
least two key exclusive MS products, I'd move to a linux
    distro in a heartbeat.

And I kept with OS2 for a long time until I had to switch because of
programs I needed for my work where everyone else was on Windows.

I'm pretty happy with my setup - I use DOSBOX and Windows 10 in concert.

    1. I download a QWK packet using the ftp client in Windows 10.

    2. Open DOSBOX in full-screen, and run MultiMail, Qedit, and all of my old
    DOS tools.

    3. Close Multimail and create a REP packet.

    4. Upload the REP packet in Windows 10.

I could never get archivers to work correctly in vDOS, but I loved the
screen appearance. I found a couple of tweaks to DOSBOX to smooth the
screen fonts and make it a bit less jaggedy.

DOSBOX lets you connect a serial port to a IP port on the host, so you could connect port 23 to COMM1, and telnet by typing in ATDT <name of the BBS>. I couldn't get ZModem working well enough; if I did I could skip the command- line FTP steps.

It does a great job of mirroring how I called my BBS and others back in the dial-up/DOS days.

That explains why the original subject line got cut off a bit! LOL
Can you implement something that supports QWKE packets? QWKE is supposed to fix
the problem of the 25-char limit in QWK.

Do you use the BW format packets in Bluewave or do you use the fall-back QWK format?

Durango is supposed to support QWK/QWKE. I've seen one user flying the following tag at the end of their messages:

    ---
    *Durango b301 #PE*

Durango is supposed to operate more like a database and allows you to combine the contents of previous QWK packets all together too.

    QWK.

I have heard that, but not sure that Bluewave supports it or not. In
any case, I'm happy with what has worked quite well for me for a quarter century.

Do you use the BW format packets in Bluewave or do you use
    the fall-back QWK format?

I never installed a BW door on my Maximus.

I have apps that can combine QWK packets, but do not have any desire to
    do so.
