• Email received and forwarded

From Vela025@BEEBS2 to All on Mon Nov 11 18:16:48 2024
    Hey All,
My BBS can send and receive emails, however if I receive an email on my BBS address (vela025@beebs.ddns.net) Synchronet succesfully forwards the email to my personal email addess, but it does not appear in my email messages within the BBS (selecting E from the main menu, followed by R). Is there a setting i need to change so that the email is both forwarded and remains visable from within the BBS?
I think everything is working fine as I get the notification when I log in to the BBS to say that the email has been received and forwarded.
    Any help welcome,
    Cheers,
    Ed

That's not an option. When the message is forwarded, it's deleted in the BBS's mail base.

As Digital Man says, the forwarded message is deleted. I would probably use something like fetchmail that'll pick up the messages in your account and shuffle them somewhere else. Not an ideal solution but a workaround to keep messages in 2 places.

A config option to leave messages on the server after forwarding might be useful.

that sounds like a good idea for an option, though. why not have both.

Thanks both, I'll look in to fetchmail. It would be nice to be able to keep them on the BBS as well as forwarding them.

    Any help welcome,

I requested a similar feature about a year ago:

    https://gitlab.synchro.net/main/sbbs/-/issues/593

Unfortunately it didn't get implemented, so I chose to add my BBS email account to my devices using pop3s for PC, Laptop, Phone, rather than have the email duplicated into two mailboxes.

    Hope that helps?

that sounds like a good idea for an option, though. why not have both.

The main reason is that forwarding an incoming email does not create a copy of the message in the first place. It simply stores the incoming email as an outgoing email. There aren't 2 copies of the email and the one that is stored is an outbound email or netmail message, not visible to the user. So not deleting it wouldn't help.

You'd have to create 2 copies of the incoming email (one for the local mail base, visible to the user and one for delivery/forwarding to the external mail address), and that seems convoluted and silly to me. Not impossible however.

Trying to do this in Thunderbird. Having a hard time getting them to shake hands. Possibly how to do the passwords?

well it wouldn't be the first convoluted and silly thing in synchronet.
It would be nice to save a copy and in the subject tag it with (forwarded)

If you're referring to pop3 - make sure its running on your sbbs installation.

I use pop3s, so thats tcp/995 to receive and I use submission to send to thats tcp/587.

Re username/password - same as what you could use to login to your BBS.
