• Properly setting up SEQ files for display in c64-PETSCII access mode

From Odusseus71 to all on Tue Sep 24 23:59:45 2024
    Hello All,

trying to set-up my own BBS for retrocomputers and it is now time of managing C64 access on dedicated port.

Anything is smooth by using ascii files with .40col.asc extension, but would like to introduce .seq files as well.

Looks like PETSCII SEQ is mostly a (sequential) export format for the few PETSCII editors.

I've understood from the link below that I need to include upper/graphics character by sending the character 142, to properly display SEQ files sketched with the uppercase charset, and add a pause/hit-a-key prompt at the end of PETSCII-graphics files to reset to lowercase:

    http://oldschool.synchronetbbs.org:2000/?page=001-forum.ssjs&sub=dove-syncdisc& thread=1684

I would appreciate any hint about any quick way to edit the SEQ file in order to add character 142 at the beginning (and the Pause @-code at the end).

Thanks in advance for patience and support.

    BR

Will answer myself: the SEQ can be edited by an HEX Editor, by inputting value 8E at the beginning of the file irtself.

Still not sure about the PAUSE at end.

    Thanks a lot

It depends on the editor you're using (how you can enter special characters into the file). To make this easier, I've added support to SBBS (just now) for an PETGRFX @-code that a sysop can easily type (using any editor) into their SEQ files that need it.

    Type @pause@ (in uppercase).

    Thank you for the feedback!

It depends on the editor you're using (how you can enter special characters into the file)

For inserting the char 142 (or $8E), I used an online HEX editor, and it worked to set upper/graphics at the beginning.

But, regarding the @pause@ at the end, in order to avoid immediate return to lower charset after image loading is complete:

    Type @pause@ (in uppercase).

tried with Notepad/Notepad++ but it did not work... it only shows the text "@pause@" in the displayed image.

Any recommendation for and editor for inserting @-codes in the SEQ file?

    Thank you!

Any editor should work, but you have to have the word between the @'s in UPPERCASE (all-cap letters). Did you do that?

    WTF??

Let the inclusion of '13' be your big clue for this one.

Pass it through rot26 a few times and it might become decipherable.

    Hello Rob,

yes, I did it by adding 40 50 41 55 53 45 40 hex values for @PAUSE@ at the end of the SEQ file directly in the Hex Editor and it worked!

    Thanks a lot

Most hex editors still allow text/ASCII input.
