• this echo

From Mike Luther@1:117/3001 to David Calafrancesco on Sun Oct 14 07:35:14 2001
    Hi Dave ..

    Hello all!

Is there still interest in keeping this echo? If not,
then we need to look into a graceful shutdown. If
there is interest in keeping it, then we need to get
    people using it.

Looking back over the roster of the last 150 messages, it shows that the echo is apparently used for problem solving for tools that relate OS/2 to the Internet. What happens is that problems that show up in them are, thankfully, fewish and far betweenish, it seems! The topics that show up here thus come in
spurts with dead air in between.

That's somewhat like the Aviation Echo! To which there is an old aviation tale
about flying being hours and hours of boredom with occaisional minutes of sheer
    terror!

One reason it might be a good idea to keep the echo, even though there is minimal traffic might be that OS/2 might actually experience a somewhat spurt in new interest! There are a rather substantial number of folks out there who are little folk in the scheme of things. They have a box at home,a couple of them .. or so, or .. are running small systems for proprieterships of one kind or othere.

They are very much wringing their hands over the new Microsoft policy of wrenching a substantial sum out of their pocketbooks on a fairly regular basis which has just, apparently, taken a quantum leap with XP. I personally know over a dozen who simply, to they think, can't afford to deal with the M/S creature any longer, Whether that is a realistic outlook or not is another matter. As in beauty, ugliness is also in the eye of the beholder!

I personally know more than one such party who is busy trying to learn enough about OS/2 to either put it up for the first time, or had it way back in version 2.0 or early 3.0 and dropped it. Of course, they face the EOSL of Warp
4.0 and a somewhat cost of keeping OS/2 as well. But they are also looking at ODIN, what have you.

Like it or not, IBM and OS/2 still never have done the user-install and get me up and running gee-whiz wasn't that easy that Microsoft did for Windows! You have to give M/S credit for doing a far better job at that, I think. Of course
we can argue all day long about what doesn't stay working once you install it, but ... as the years have gone by what used to be roaring instability has been solved, somewhat .. viri not withstanding, one would think.

The people who do take another look at OS/2 will still face the same problems in INET relationships that many of us have faced and found answers here, I suspect.

I could have, for example, tossed the recent thread on viri and OS/2 into this echo instead of starting it in the generalized one. That was, probably, looking
back on it, a bad error on my part. The issue was a toss-up between networking
and OS/2 and INET and OS/2. As we are seeing, there is a bluring of the two concepts at this point, isn't there?

The whole issue of DSL and connectivity with OS/2 is producing a fair amount of
traffic in the Usegroups now. That as DSL and other broadband stuff move closer and closer to more of us.

Isn't this the right place for that stuff too?

Or are my perceptions off base?

Sleep well; OS/2's still awake! ;)

    Eddy ..

dagum first message in the area pointer bug
<<sigh>> if i had seen the
indication that there was a message in here, i'd have answered ml>
    sooner...

At least your message got out, I don't know why David didn't see it.

As I have tried to explain in the LAN version of all this, it may have to do with Steve Loupe's 106/1 in Houston. Two things went badly wrong in Houston of
late which have *NOTHING* to do with Steve's capability or service efforts.

1.) Houston took a substantial environmental whambo with Mother Nature
and the weather. Phone line service was bloto to a lot of places
between those people who depend on Steve, as well as Steve's
    phone line connections as well.

2.) More or less in the middle of all this, Steve was 'forced' to
switch his IP feed source. As he carefully announced, the
instructions on how to prepare for that and his intentions as
to un-interrupted service were very explicit.

The IP swap game went sour. Many of us who depend on him,
including me, had no connections with him for more and a day
or so. It appeared that a ton of traffic that was bound from
him to me stacked up at his site, but I can't be sure all of it
is what there is. There is some that was here which I am almost
sure did *NOT* make it through that HUB. Included in the missing
stuff was stuff that I'm absolutely sure got missed in R19SYSOP,
from what we determined later - which is part of what I stand on
    to make this claim.

My post in this area for the help request for APACHE was, it seems, lost in this shuffle in Houston, and Dave .. plus I know not whom else, never saw it here. However, as you can see, the link game, in general, for this echo is not
    broken.

Had my Apache help request gone through, and even the answers that it has gotten so far, once cross posted to the OS2LAN echo and seen, my bet is that this echo would have enough traffic in it to be still traffic validated, but barely. Further, when I get the time do act on what suggestions have been posted on my Apache problem, including what Dave himself suggested, I intend to
    re-visit that whole tning.

    In specific ..

ECHO SPECIFIC HERE .. I think!

1.) It is precisely because Apache for OS/2 is installed in a
generic form with as little fluff to go wrong as possible,
that it is up for test here.

2.) I have a fully paid for version of WSeB that came with my
DEVCON membership that I have not even put up, to pair
with whatever Port 80 service I might leave up.

3.) My IP would *LOV* to have me host my own page at my fixed
address and I could save some $30 a month to do so.

4.) There is only so much time to fool with any of this stuff
with what has to be done to feed me and whomever .. giggle.

5.) I likely will have lots more questions about the other than
Apache stuff as I mature in this game.

6.) To separate that from the actual LAN server questions
I would have normally thought posting all that here would
have been right square on topic.

Nor will I in any way question what Dave wants to do about all this.

And I do not want to post messages just to keep it alive, if that's not really what is wanted. Nor is this message being posted if it isn't on-topic and point specific.

Obviously, since I'm seeing your traffic and mine is now getting out, it's a point in my favor as to support for my explanation of what happened here. Life's too short to fight over what the minority wants .. grin.

The core issue is that a loss of service at a critical point in a minimal traffic echo can produce results which have to be carefully thought about. That
is exactly what, I suspect, is happening right now.

I'm checking here to make sure I don't have it confused somehow here! I show the following for the MSGAREA.CTL for MAX here at 3001 on it:

    MsgArea 260
    ACS demoted
    Desc OS2INET (FIDO)
    Style *.msg Echo Pub
    Tag OS2INET
    Path c:\msg\os2init

    End MsgArea

In the SQUISH control side of things I show:

    C:\MSG\OS2INIT OS2INET 1:117/100 1:117/600

At the HUB here at 1:117/100 that's also under me I show:

    MsgArea 260
    ACS Disgrace
    Desc OS2INET (FIDO)
    Path H:\FIDO\OS2INET

    % Override <menu_name> <option_type> <acs> [<key>]
% CONVERT WARNING! The above line must be converted manually,
    % Original: 'MsgOverride E Disgrace'

% modified to use the correct origination address.
    Tag OS2INET
    Renum Days 90
    Renum Max 200
    Style Squish Echo Pub RealName
    End MsgArea

In the SQUISH control side of things there I show:

    EchoArea OS2INET H:\FIDO\OS2INET -$ 1:106/1 117/3001

Everything I toss upstream is to Steve Loupe in Houston at 1:106/1

My FastEcho control file for the HUB here also shows:

    Name: OS2INET
    Comment:
Origin: Brazos Valley Hub * College Station TX * 979-696-3600
    Type: EchoMail
    Storage: Squish Board:
    Path: H:\FIDO\OS2INET

    Options fields ... snipped ....
    Seen-by: 1:117/100
    Export to: 1:106/1 117/3001

What comes in here to OS2INET back to here, which included your last messsage as well as a few others, does come back down the pipeline to me as if nothing is wrong.

So I don't think that the cross pollination of this lovely flowerlette is happening via my bumbling bee!

Two completely different BBS systems. I got given the 1:117/100 HUB when it was abandoned. It was all in different systems and I could not get Intermail out of the pile for OS/2. It happened to be all on a stack of small SCSI hard drives, one per partition. I only had about two weeks to either do or die. So I simply took hard disk space and carved it all up out on one drive and cloned it all onto there.

The entire HUB runs totally separate and apart from the 3001 setup, separate phone lines and OS/2 sessions. As soon as I can get Intermail for OS/2 from Dale down in Sugarland now, I'll merge it all. But for now, oh well!

I don't see that cross pollination in your setup, so

Bumble bees are interesting. Two arrived in unison in formation to fill up at an Exxon station, hovering near the pumps. One was at the regular pump. The other was at the extra pump! Both were chanting in unison, "Fill us up! Fill us
up!" The attendant scratched his head, jammed the nozzle in each bee and set off wiping the feelers of the one at the regular pump.

He asked, "You know, I don't understand! You look alike, you buzz alike, you are both sinking as you take on fuel! But what's the difference?"

The bee turned to him and said, "Well, confidentially, I'm a regular bee and he's an Esso Bee!"

Not anything at all personal here .. just in complete humor, OK? Some networking problems are like this! They look alike, they buzz alike, they toss
around alike in the dark, but are just heck to find!
