  • DOS "sleep" utility

    Greetings mark!

    A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, a coded message from mark lewis to Don Guy was intercepted...

    it would seem that you don't simply want to delay/sleep for a time
    but instead to actually wait for the other task to complete before resuming??

    Yes and no. :-) I'm attempting to mirror a REXX script with a DOS batch file,
    which loops until a semaphore has been cleared.

    :Top
    if exist FILENAME.EXT
    sleep(x)
    goto Top

    I could simply eliminate the sleep() function, but I'd prefer to avoid unnecessary CPU loading.

    To that extent I'll also mail you my rework of it for DOS called
    SNOOZE which doesn't have that problem and will yield up time slices
    at the same time it is doing a fair job that WAIT also does ..

    That sounds ideal--e-mail on its way!

    My goal is a non-CPU intensive loop, while waiting for a semaphore to be cleared. Mike Luther was kind enough to share a utility of his with me which sounds like it will do the trick, though I haven't had the opportunity to try it yet. My fiancee rolled her car earlier this morning--it's been a busy day.

    Why don't you use 4OS2 which have all this facilities ?

    Simple--it never occurred to me. Native OS/2, combined with REXX, has all the features which I need. The only reason why a need for a DOS equivalent of sleep() has come up, is that I am trying to set up my system to toss mail when it is up under Win98.

    <<smack in my head>> duh... or 4DOS in DOS-VDMs... i generally always remember those two as i run them for everything over here... if it wasn't for 4DOS and 4OS2, my system wouldn't...
