• PowerBASIC 3.5 for DOS

From Robert Wolfe@1:116/18 to All on Tue Jun 27 21:43:00 2017
    Hi all!

I have a license for PowerBASIC 3.5 for DOS and would like to use it
on any of my ArcaOS installations. However, when I go to run any of
the .EXE files I get a message basically saying that the program is
too big to fit in memory (I have not tried it under eCS or WSEB yet,
but will do that after I post this).

I am just wondering if anyone also has this fine program and is able
to run it without issue under OS/2 (any version) and if so, how?

TIA for any assistance you can provide.

I seem to remember there was a way to get an OS/2 DOS session to have
even more than 640k conventional memory, using tricks in the config.sys
and in the DOS session settings. But, I know I can't remember it now.

Once place to start would be in the config.sys. Make sure DOS= line is
    HIGH,UMB

There was other tricks, but I can't remember them and a quick google
search didn't turn anything up. But I'll keep looking.

    I did find this

    https://www.pcorner.com/list/OS2/CFGINFO.ZIP/OS2CFG8.DAT/

If you search down for "If you need maximum memory", there is some info there on how to get up to 724k in a DOS session. Not sure if that'll work, but it's worth a try.

And I'd suggest you make a separate "program" icon for this so you don't mess with your default DOS Session settings.

And there are other old config.sys tips on that page that I used to use when I had minimal power/ram.

have you enabled extended and.or expanded memory in that DOS instance?

i have not... i dropped BASIC when i learned ASM and PASCAL... that was about the time that Borland's Turbo Pascal 2 for PCs was released... i started there and went to TP3 as soon as it was released and i've never looked back...

Hmm, went through my config.sys file and found this:

    DOS=LOW,NOUMB

Maybe I will change that, reboot and see if that helps :)
