• Version upgrade help

From Marc Lewis@1:396/45 to All on Tue Dec 5 22:43:36 2017
    Hello All.

Both of my BBS related machines run eCS2.0RC5. I have on hand eCS2.0GA to upgrade to. Does anyone have any hints to doing an upgrade/update, hopefully without doing an uninstall of the present system?

    Best regards,
    Marc

There is an upgrade program named QF121.ZIP (Quikfix v1.21) available
that has worked very well for me whem upgrading Warp OS/2.

The author is Jon Saxton (triton@attglobal.net) .

The version I have is from 1999, but you may contact the author for more
    info.

I'm a bit surprised that eCS doesn't give any instructions to upgrade
    from an earlier version.

I really hope that ArcaOS does have an upgrade path from OS/2 Warp,
because that will be my next step up.

    Have a good night,

    Holger

Is this a VM or a physical machine? Either way I would do a backup first
and then run the upgrade portion of the setup as I believe the ECS installer will detect an existing ECS install and then switch over to migration mode automatically.

But, why not upgrade to ArcaOS 5.0.1? :) (Oh, that would require a fresh install of the OS though, sadly.)

IIRC, it does. See my previous response to Marc.

Nope. Full, clean install only. At least in version 5.0.1, which is
    what I am running here.

I do a VM export once a week onto external media. I don't run ArcaOS
or eCS on physical hardware. I run them using Oracle VirtualBox.

Since that last posting, I have upgraded to v5.0.2. Not much difference, just a few installer enhancements (like the ability to install off of a USB flash drive). So far, it has been working out quite well.

Maybe we will soon be able to run ArcaOS off an USB stick.
When that is possible you can take your operating system anywhere you go

I *THINK* you can do this now. If not, I KNOW you can install it from a USB stick. I may have to see if I can install it on a USB stick here and see what happens :)

The only issue I see with that is the myriad amount of network cards out there that would have to be changed on each system you boot the USB stick from.

    Peace,
    Robert

It has been done before with other operating systems and years ago an
OS/2 user in russia offered such a possibility, free, but I never got
a response to my mail to him.

Well, I don't see a problem with that because others have done it and
there is also an application that does it with Windows using mobile applications of known programmes.

    Have a nice day,
