From Bob Seaborn@1:140/12 to Anyone on Mon Mar 4 09:01:00 2013
I have an os2 box (that runs my Fido system) with HPFS formatted drives and
    the drives are failing.

Does anyone have any software (or suggestion) that will accurately
build an image of an HPFS drive, and then replicate it on a new/replacement drive.

Anything to avoid complete rebuilding of the OS/2 system on a new
    drive. :)

I have done the same few times simply by taking the hard disc out of the
OS/2 computer and cloned it in a Windows computer with Norton Ghost.
Also possible to use bootable CD or even a floppy to do the job.

You betcha! The most wonderful application for this I've ever seen is DFSEE which can be completely researched at www.dfsee.com for you. It can completely
service, clone, copy DOS/OS2/Windows/Linux hard disks and at least from even a DOS boot it can completely service HPFS OS/2 stuff. Log on and take a look at what the author Jan van Wijk has created. It is a treasure of a tool.

And individual can get a package of it for real cheap, as well as a limited use
edition for trial purposes. At the $25 or so USD bucks for a licensed version that has *ALL* the op system inter-related tools on it I'd think that ANYONE would be willing to pay Jan for his work.

If you are in the USA, since Jan is in the Netherlands, you can make a deal with BMT Micro to electronically transfer your little bitty payment for it. Rather than a large buckload for an international certified check. Or if you are using a credit card that can internationally do it for you as far as I know
    it won't be too bad.

You will be SHOCKED at what you can do with OS/2 stuff all the way from DOS to OS/2 MPTS or JFS formatted disk stuff. I use his tools all the time to back up
all my work even cross between HPFS SCSI stuff to USB plug in drive stuff!

The current level of his work is DFSEE 1.15 which works just fine here.

you might be able to go the old hotserv way if you hurry...

add the new drive and boot off of emergency OS/2 boot diskettes... then

    XCOPY /H/O/T/S/E/R/V c: x:

that'll copy everything over... i believe the only other thing you need to do after that is to put the system on the new drive with the sysinst command... i think i got that right...

Anything to avoid complete rebuilding of the OS/2 system on
    a new drive. :)

you might also try DFSEE and clone the partition to the new drive... i did this
recently but my boot drive was not bootable so i was mainly after my data drives... i used the trial version booting off floppy and saved some 80G of stuff across four or five partitions... that is when i moved to eCS a few months back on the main server box...

What version Ghost? I don't believe the newest versions will work with HPFS.

I cannot remember the version, it has been few years when I last cloned
my OS/2 disk. Pretty old I think, 2003 or so.

However, the version that I used was able to clone the whole drive
sector by sector. It had no idea about any file systems on it.

About a week ago, the OS/2 boot disc self destructed, refusing to boot (couldn't find PMSHELL.EXE). Luckily I did have a valid current backup of all my Fido stuff, including undelivered outbound traffic.

So with the help of my son (and Charles Cruden - author of Internet Rex), I reinstalled the complete Fido system on an OS/2 setup on one of my son's VMWare servers, and (so far) looks like everything is flowing smoothly.

As of this weekend I did change my nodelisting to remove the POTS line, as the last call was received on it on March 04, 2012 - from an ip-capable Fido
node. I don't operate any form of bbs, so see no need to maintain a POTS line that's rarely, if ever, used.

ouch! but we knew it was coming, right?

double ouch! at least you didn't loose it all and decide not to come back...

when i had a similar problem a little while back, i was very glad that i had decided years ago to have one partition for the OS and other partitions for all
my other stuff... that way if the OS went south, as it did, i only needed to grab the other partitions and fit them into a new installation... in my case, i
went from Warp 3 Connect to eCS2 but everything else stayed the same... i'm even using my 4OS2 and 4DOS as i've always done and not that which comes with eCS (4OS2 only)... i'm still running my old reliable Apache 1337 server ;)

i can understand that... there's not many POTS only systems coming into fidonet
these days and for those that are, there are plenty of POTS capably systems that can handle their needs ;)

I'm actually surprised that it lasted as long as it did. Especially as
    I had Quantum HD's in service. :)

Normally I do a complete weekly backup, however this time I had made it about 30 mins before the system self-destructed.

    That was not even considered.

Right now I can't consider the cost of eCS as a worthwhile expense.
