• TZUTC kludge

    Hi,

[Now that I know you are reading here. ;)]

How about D'Bridge adding a TZUTC kludge to messages it generates? Should be easy enough to implement!?

    Bye, Wilfred.

    Wilfred,

That looks like a private conversation ... maybe move it to netmail before the self-appointed echo-snatching moderator finds out. :-)

Seriously, why wouldn't you implement it?

I'm asking because I was thinking about a maintenance function in FMail to sort
messages in a jam area in chronological order. It sometimes happens when there is a "hickup" in the echomail feed, you get a bunch of pkt files at once that don't get imported in their proper order. Reading the new messages in an area where this happend is not pleasant.

But to be able to sort messages in their propper chronological order, in this world wide network, you need to know their "real" time in UTC.

So I was going through some areas to look at the usage of the TZUTC flag, and was surprised how little it is used.

I could implement some lookup table that determines the UTC offset from the zone and netnumber. But that is a lot of work and not watertight. Because there
are for instance points that are in a different timezone than their bosses. So it would be better if the TZUTC flag would be present in as many as possible messages!

    Bye, Wilfred.

    I never said I wouldn't. I noted the request. Somewhere between a
magical mystical sexy fancy Linux version and support for Squish/JAM/Synchronet/Wildcat/Whatever I'll add something for this. Possibly just code for the editor to add whatever user-defined kludges defined.

So I was going through some areas to look at the usage of the TZUTC flag, a was surprised how little it is used.

You have to remember that a lot of Fido products were written during a time when Echomail was really becoming popular and programmers could not necessarily agree on what kludges to implement as standard. A lot of
software really implemented what was "required" and not proposals.

INTL and FMPT/TOPT come to mind... I'm sure theres others.

Btw: Your editor is broken. It cut out part (the letter 'e') of my original text in the quote.

And there is no reply kludge, so the reply-chain gets broken. :-(

    Bye, Wilfred.

Afaik 'noted' is mostly used when people want to say they read it, but don't intend to do anything further with it... ;)

Somewhere between a magical mystical sexy fancy Linux version

Tell me about it. It's on my list to create a linux FMail, for ages. ;)

and support for Squish/JAM/Synchronet/Wildcat/Whatever I'll add

It's a small request, so easy to sqeeze in there somewhere! ;)

Of course, but the TZUTC kludge is a standard now:

I know, this is my BBS software, not the mailer thats doing that.

I have the source code to my BBS software but have not gotten around to fixing the linking. The message quoting I'm not touching with a ten-foot-pole.
