    What's the best series of Monty Python's Flying Circus? 1, 2, 3 or 4?

Is there a general conscensus among fans?

    A simple question?

Of course there is no consensus.

Good, then it was a simple question!

But how can this be the case?

There is a general consensus over which two of the four films, and which two rocked, anyone with a basic knowledge of Monty Python knows that.
So it is ridiculous of you to think that there wouldn't be general agreement over which series sucked more or less than others.
If you don't know the answer, what did you post for?

You are a stupid english kenigget and your grandmother drinks
    elderberry
    wine.
I fart in your general direction. Now go away while I insult you some
    more.

You must be very lonely with those people skills.

You probably have never seen any Monty Python,- Hide quoted text -

Yes, an MP fan would know that classic insult right off the bat......

But to answer the not-so-simple question, I would say the first series
is the best, just because everything is new and fresh.
To quote another classic British comedy show, I am unanimous in that.

I know the insult but it has nothing to do with the question.
And it makes no difference weather i'm a huge fan or have never seen the
    show or a movie.
