Returning from a bowl of cornflakes, I was bemused to have seen *Dr. Robert* write this:
Anyone see "Spam-a-lot"? (Actually, with you lot I should better ask,
"anyone NOT see it!" : )
I saw it last week on Broadway and thought it was absolutely brilliant!
Fun, well done, so enjoyable!
I am new to this group and missed the inevitable posts when it came out, so excuse my tardiness.
So? What did you think?
Burma!
Best,
Dr. Robert
Yep, saw it here in Chicago earlier this year and I, too, thought it was brilliant. Mind you, this was the second time through town (it opened here, ya
know), and without the original cast which included Tim Curry, David Hyde Pierce
and Hank Azaria, but it really didn't matter. Liked 'em just as much.
It was a hoot to see the old favorite vignettes staged - and rather faithfully,
too - where the audience burst into applause knowing what was coming up. The Taunting French Soldier was especially a riot.
I also liked how they worked in an expanded role for the Lady of the Lake. She
was fiiiiiine.
(Side note: I saw Martin Short's "Fame Becomes Me" where he employed the same device of how a hit Broadway show "needs" a show-stopping number sung by a black
woman. That's OK. Still funny.)
How would an actor like to have "Drop Dead Fred" listed on his resume credits? It's Spamalot, that's what!
Lancelot is gay? Who'd a thunk it? No, it's too perilous.
Oh, and did they find a Jew in the audience for your show, too? They "found" a
"Carol Feldman" in D101 in the show I attended. The crowd went nuts while King
Arthur made a subtle clasped-hands "thank you" to the heavens. I darn near fell
out on that one.
Lastly, I should think that even if one isn't a Python fan, they'd still find the show a blast. It's soooo silly.
