    Sorry for my no-so-perfect English.

    People, I translate Monty Python's Flying Circus in Russian. Could youhelp me with some aspects I don't understand? I think that would be also interesting to
    any non-English speaking people.

    1. 'Wither Canada' title. Which meaning of 'whither' was meant?

    2. 'Owl-Sretching Time'. What does it mean?

    3. What means 'Caerphilly A Go-Go' -- that's from scetch of mouse men.

    4. What means 'eyeties' - that's from Army Racket scetch, with two Italian gangsters.

    That's for start, I've got more. (:

    That was 'stretching' and it was just a piece of nonsense. It was the first name they thought of for Monty Python's Flying Circus. If nothing else, owls are Protected Species in the UK and if anyone tried to stretch one they could be arrested.


    3. What means 'Caerphilly A Go-Go' -- that's from scetch of mouse men.

    Caerphilly is a very nice Welsh cheese and Go-Go is from the name of the first British discotheque, the Whiskey-a-Gogo in Soho, London.

    I know because I was an engineer in those days and used to maintain their telephones.

    Discotheque was the fashionable name for nightclubs intended for younger people
    in the 60s.

    It's a rude word for Italians.

    This dictionary site might help. It includes several encyclopædias (encyclopædiæ? :o) including Wikipedia which often has entries for obscure things like Monty Python.

    Good luck with your translations. I've got some Python episodes on tape broadcast in Germany with sub-titles and they had quite a lot of difficulty translating it into German which is a much easier language.

    Oh, by the way I *can* use dictionaries. (: The problem is I never can be sure did I understand some joke correctly. I'm a great Pythons fan, so I's die of shame if translate some jokes incorrectly. Better safe then sorry. So I ask any

    What means £5.18.3d ? It's 5 pounds and what else?

    And a general question. Some names in Puthons shows have a meaning. I mean, inspector Praline, inspector Parrot and so on. Most of them does not used in scetch itself. Should I translate these names? The fact is there are non-meanful names in the very same scetch, so the difference would be apparent.
    So how do you think, is these names important?

    And last question for people who know German.

    What means 'Was ist das Won für Mittelschmerz?' -- that's from Italian Lesson of season 1 series 1. My German is not sufficient or this is just another gibberish?

    It's gibberish. Litteraly translated it would mean "what is the word for middle
    pain?". Not much sense there, eh?

    actually "Mittelschmerz" does have a meaning in German. It's a particular kind
    of pain, some woman experience during (approximately in the middle of) their menstruation.

    I would guess that even most Germans have never heard the term.

    As to _why_ Helmut might have asked for it, I have no idea.
