From Andrew Leary@1:320/219 to All on Sun May 3 20:29:43 2015
    Hello everybody!

I am working on a couple of things for MBSE in my spare time, so if anyone has any requests, please let me know.

    1. Support for sending mail packets uncompressed. This is an option in some other packages.
    2. Support for editing file descriptions in the file database.
    3. Support for literal IPv6 addresses in the mailer; currently IPv6 is only supported if a node has an AAAA record when the hostname is resolved.

    Regards,

    Andrew

I had a quick look at 1.0.4 a couple months ago and noticed a problem with the chat server. I had just installed MBSE so maybe it was a misconfiguration of some sort but if I pressed 4 (I think, roughly anyway) from mbmon the chat window didn't come up fully and I couldn't get back to mbmon so I hit "<ctrl> c" and that crashed mbtask. I hope I've explained that in a way you can understand.

Another concern I had with MBSE is that (when I ran MBSE) I spent a lot of
time in mbsetup, mostly just correcting typos or just looking things over.
When I entered certain areas of mbsetup the status in the upper right corner would change to busy or closed even if I was just looking around. I think it would be better if MBSE just reread it's config if and when it needs to do
that rather than closing the BBS and mailer down when I am probably just looking around the config.

    That's just my $0.02. :)

    MBSE can already do this.

Mbsetup, Node setup (7), Choose a node, General Setup (1), Pack mail (12) needs to be set to no.

My system hasn't been compressing packets for the past year.

Hmmm... Don't know how I missed that one. So what's missing is the ability for nodes to activate that option via an AreaFix request. That should be easy to add.

The reason why mbse stops or closes is to prevent any issues with users/sysops coming through while the system parameters data files etc are being updated.

It has no way of knowing if you are just looking and treats all as possible changes.

While I have never looked in detail I cannot say I have noticed it doing that in any area of non-importance assuming there is any!

Mbse does not support multi node functioning as in having multi copyies running
useing the same databases in different VM's running it.

When I was running in that instance I cheated by building the mbse data areas on and for each load but this was not for mail/file processing as that was held
    until a user/mail session ended.

I have at least for the moment stopped doing it this way as since I have switched to a boot SSD drive I have not seen a performance/security reason to do so but that could always change as I am considering moving mbse processing to Z/OS unix but for that its really me just playing around and use Z/OS normally doing big iron stuff on smaller iron.

Well got to find some things for keeping me busy now that I am retired !

Support for reprocessing mail in bad area/s if/when area has been set up - In fact with an option should set up new mail area same as it does with files e.g., autocreate .

The editing file descriptions along with some kind of limiting the type of characters allowed e.g., special char that is restricted by sysop would be very
useful judging by some of the crap that is inside some file descriptions issued
    by some uploaders !

    Yes.

What I would like to see is "Pass-through" echomail area's.

For now you should be able to to approximate that by setting very low purge limits; like 1 day. It's not a true pass-through but it will limit the amount of space used for message bases.

Scrap that. I have been looking over MBSE again and after getting it setup
more fully that isn't happening anymore. I'm not sure exactly what I changed
to make it work.. but it works as expected. :)

Glad to hear that. I haven't touched the code for the chat server, so it would probably take a while to debug any issues with that.
