I think 2.29 was the last full shareware release. While I have the
shareware versions for DOS, Linux, Windows, and OS/2 in my files area,
they are limited to the number of connects if IREX isn't unregistered. I
don't know if there is a "expiration" on the time, as I've seen other
programs lately that if you don't register them by a certain time, they
    shut down.

One side note in the case of IREX...I heard that IREX apparently also transmits the registration code and other info back to the author,
Charles Cruden...so, he can track "illegally registered copies". Quite a
bit of software has that capability now.

I will add that if the shareware author will support his product, then
it's the least I can do to register it. However, so many programs from
the "BBS heyday" are now abandonware, and no longer registerable. With
IREX, though...you can register it through BMT Micro...and the code is
good for all OS versions. Plus, once you initially register it (such as
the 50 node, no server version for $25), and you upgrade to the 1000
node, server version, you just pay the difference ($25), as the fee for
    the latter is $50.

And, apparently the 1000 node, server version is the ONLY one that
will allow IREX to allow connects from unlisted systems. Otherwise, you
may enter and save it in the configuration program, but when you load it
again, the value for that is set back to "NO".

I know there was a utility to check if ones system could handle the
"virtual memory" of XP, but all my systems would need upgrading to pass
    that test.

My main concern is that I have a large number of legacy programs that
will run under 32-bit (such as under XP), but they will NOT work under
64-bit. The BBS is one of the last hobbies I can still do, and I can't
see upgrading the OS just to satisfy Microsoft's Corporate Greed (never
mind the cost), and then having to reinstall everything.

I know there was a utility to check if ones system could handle the "virtual memory" of XP, but all my systems would need upgrading to pass that test.

If you wish to run XP in a VM then you also need to have the BIOS and CPU capable of doing that. There will be a setting in the BIOS, or the UEFI.

If you are upgrading from XP, to Windows 7 or 8, then you will need to do a clean install. Having a 32 bit version of the OS will allow you to run 16 bit programs still as well. However, because of a clean install, you will have to reinstall all of your previous programs. Been there, done that. It is always better in any case to do a clean install.

I understand one is LUCKY to get a 32-bit version of Windows 7.

I can get it all day long :) That, Windows XP, DOS 6.1, Windows 3.1,
    Windows 3.11, Winserver Server 2003, Server 2008, 2008 R2, etc, etc. :)
It's just that at certain times of the day, the TechNet download site
    is slow :)

It's always nice to know someone who has Mr. Gates as a close personal friend... :)

Up until last year, when they cancelled the Technet program,
anybody could subscribe to the service. I know as I have for the past four years.

I have a close friend that's an IT guy for Microsoft products. I have a few "keys" laying around the house somewhere... :)

Nothing wrong with that. Finding suckers to sign up for dead services is

Yeah, I got my subscription renewed the day before they ended the program.
Now I just get on with my business connection at home and sometimes on my fiber connection at work and grab stuff off TechNet.

It's only dead if you are signing up as a new subscriber AFTER they have stopped giving new subscriptions to the service. I got my current renewal
the day before they stopped taking new subscriptions, so I still have
access to all the stuff they have there on TechNet. After my year is up,
then it will be no more. I might just move on to MSDN or request access to
the partner stuff through my employer.

I was able to get a two year full subscription for $43 (Charity package due to who I work for) and it still had about 18 months to go when the program got cancelled. Too bad, it was an excellent opportunity to play with new stuff.
