The thing is, according to the site, a demo version is NOT
available.
I'm running 2.29 myself, as the 1000 node server version.

I never said there was a demo version. Someone just asked where they BM>could get it. I really think if enough of us discuss with Charles
the importance of him renewing his commitment he may reconsider

Agreed. :)

A couple years ago I got ahold of version 2.31 which is the version
I've been running. Been rock solid for me. :)

Nope... windows7 32bit :)

I would recommend you back up your old system first of course. :)

I understand one is LUCKY to get a 32-bit version of Windows 7.

Not if you purchase a full copy. 2 disks included 32 and 64 bit. If you ge JD>it preloaded from Acer, or HP, etc then it will normally be 64 bit

I tried a beta version (2.67), but it wouldn't let me enter
passwords for the connects. So, I went back to 2.29 on the
system.
I saw where one could purchase it on Amazon, but in the stores now,
it's only Windows 8 or up. If I could get the 32-bit version, I'd be tempted to see if the BBS would work under it. However, I'd likely have
to upgrade the motherboard to do it...and right now, I can't afford that as well.
Wow, that would be an older version yet. Actually, If I understand
correctly, version 2.31 IS the beta that you can't get from his
site. I don't really remember which sysop I got this version from
but like I said... it's rock solid on my system. :)
You might be surprised. I ran windows 7, as well as windows 8 betas
on 5 year old MBs. You can download a test program from MS, to
check compatibility.
I know there was a utility to check if ones system could handle the "virtual memory" of XP, but all my systems would need upgrading to pass that test.
My main concern is that I have a large number of legacy programs that will run under 32-bit (such as under XP), but they will NOT work under 64-bit. The BBS is one of the last hobbies I can still do, and I can't
see upgrading the OS just to satisfy Microsoft's Corporate Greed (never mind the cost), and then having to reinstall everything.

I can get it all day long :) That, Windows XP, DOS 6.1, Windows 3.1, Windows 3.11, Winserver Server 2003, Server 2008, 2008 R2, etc, etc. :)
It's just that at certain times of the day, the TechNet download site
is slow :)

Up until last year, when they cancelled the Technet program, anybody
could subscribe to the service. I know as I have for the past four
years.

Nothing wrong with that. Finding suckers to sign up for dead services is
how millionaires become billionaires.

Yeah, I got my subscription renewed the day before they ended the
program.
Now I just get on with my business connection at home and sometimes on
my
fiber connection at work and grab stuff off TechNet.
