  • Digital Radio - Which One and Why?

    I saw that someone said we needed some more traffic in this echo, so I
    thought I would help with this question...

    Have you started or made a total switch to digital yet? And if so, which one and what was the main reason for that particular one?

    I have started my switch. I have a new Yeasu FT2DR which uses C4FM digital. I also have an Icom ID-31 that is a UHF D-Star hand held. I plan to get a DMR radio to kind of round it out, and from there make a determination which one
    is the best for me.

    Locally we have a lot of Hams with DMR radio. It seems that is the main one most people here are using. What about you guys?

    I don't see it as a switch, rather an addition.

    I added D-STAR in 2007, just before the first repeater arrived in Melbourne. I got DMR capability in 2014, though didn't get a contact via the network until the other week, when I was in Melbourne and had access to a repeater.

    I've seen D*Star demonstrated and although it might be fun
    to tinker with, it seems like a solution in search of a problem and I couldn't justify the expense.

    I just passed the first exam and should be getting my Callsign sometime this week. I also purchased the FT2DR and have been looking forward to playing with it and seeing how it works.

    I am located in Ft Worth Texas and we seem to have quite a mix of repeaters. I'm looking at the iCom 7100 to venture off in the D*Star world and see what is going on in that direction.
