STANDARDISATION OF CALLSIGNS TO BE DISCUSSED BY THE ITU

The standardisation of callsign allocation will be up for discussion at the World Radio Conference 2001 when ITU regulation S19 is reviewed. The aim is
to change the convention so that administrations will be able to allocate special callsigns on a more permanent basis. Currently special callsigns
that do not follow the standard format are issued on a temporary basis. A
new S19 will tidy up the problem. The SARL has for many years kept an eye on ZS6SARL, who knows, after WRC2003 it may become possible.

FINLAND - DISASTER COMMUNICATIONS CONFERENCE PRAISES HAM RADIO

Amateur Radio's role in emergency communication received high praise in an opinion adopted by the recent Second Tampere Conference on Disaster Communication. Several speakers at the conference, held in Finland, also lauded the work of amateurs in the wake of disasters. Approximately 125 attended the conference, including "a notable percentage of radio amateurs" representing agencies or companies from several nations. (arrl and Qnews)

    PROPAGATION REPORT

Ean Retief, ZS1PR reports as follows:

The Solar Flux declined to a lower value than expected during the past week.

The sun had five very quiet days with only one fairly big outburst.
Fortunately it looks as if most of the ejected material will miss the earth's magnetic field.

A small bit of geomagnetic activity is expected tomorrow, but should not have very large effects.

As a result of the low solar flux the higher bands are fairly poor.

It is however hoped that the flux will rise slowly from tomorrow. There are forecasters that expects the solar flux to make a major jump by next weekend.
A look at the holographic image of the back of the sun by the SOHO spacecraft shows no major sunspot groups that can be expected at that time, so locally
we are very sceptic that such a gigantic rise will actually occur,

In the coming week there should be fair signals in the late afternoon on the ten metre band.

In the late evening from 22:30 you can expect fairly good propagation on the
40 metre band and DX from both Europe and South America should make an appearance.
