PROPAGATION REPORT
You are listening to ZS6SRL. The news follows in detail.
INTECNET TONIGHT at 20:00 CAT
The SARL Intecnet 2001 will be on the air tonight, Sunday 27 May 2001 at
20:00 CAT. The subject for discussion will be Internet repeater linking
which represents an important element in the future of Amateur Radio.
Join Ian Able G3ZHI from the UK as he will take listeners through the
process, discuss ideas and provide references to web sites where the
necessary software can be found. This will be followed by an interactive Q&A session.
The Intecnet talkshow will be broadcast on 3215 kHz sponsored by Sentech and will be interactive on repeaters in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Pietermaritzburg, Durban and the Highway areas, on the Eastern Cape Repeater network and in
Cape Town. It will also be interactive on 3718 kHz.
Clubs wishing to book an interactive link should send an Email to
armi@intekom.co.za or a fax to 012 991 5651 with their contact details before noon today.
YARIA MAKES A RETURN
YARIA, the once popular Youth for Amateur Radio in Africa programme, will return to the airwaves. This follows the agreement between the SARL and
ICASA that registered club stations may introduce amateur radio to newcomers
by arranging special events during which non-licensed persons may operate an amateur radio station using a club callsign under the supervision of a
licensed amateur.
The SARL petitioned ICASA for relaxation of the rules as we believe that this is the most effective way to let newcomers experience amateur radio, SARL president Hans Potgieter said. This new arrangement will offer clubs the opportunity to introduce practical operating experience sessions during the teaching for the Radio Amateur Examination.
Clubs are urged to register their club callsigns for this purpose with the
SARL as soon as possible. A registration form will be available on the SARL web at www.sarl.org.za early next week. Each event must be registered with
the SARL. A guideline document will be available on the SARL web soon.
AMATEUR RADIO ON SAFM

SETI LEAGUE SWITCHES ON MOOBOUNCE BEACON
The SETI League, grassroots leaders in the privatized search for Extra- terrestrial Intelligence has placed a transmitter on the air that bounces microwave signals of the surface of the moon. The transmitter operates on a frequency of 1296,000 MHz.
The SETI League's more than 1200 members in 60 countries have collectively assembled over 100 small radio telescopes, constructed by individual members
out of discarded satellite dish antennas along with sensitive microwave receivers and powerful home computers.
Traditionally radio telescopes are used to study the structure of the
universe by analysing microwave radiation emitted by natural astrophysical phenomena.
In the SETI application, it is artificial radiation from other technological civilisations that the telescopes seek to identify. In either case such as
the one now being provided by the SETI moonbounce beacon enable radio astronomers to confirm the proper operation of their equipment.
On 22 July the SETI League Executive Director, Paul Shuch will again be a
guest on the SARL Intecnet 2001 to continue his discussion on the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence. He was a popular speaker on the February Intecnet.

PROPAGATION REPORT
Ean Retief, ZS1PR reports as follows: The past week was more or less as expected.
The Solar Flux did however reach is peak on Thursday and also with a value of 170, a bit lower than the 180 envisaged over the last two weeks.
This peak value of only 170 is the lowest in several months, clearly
indicating that cycle 23 has indeed passed it's peak.
It will now appear that the Solar Flux will decline fairly fast and be in the 155 to 145 range during the coming week.
As a result of a few small Coronal Mass ejections in the last two days as
well as a Coronal Hole accelerating the Solar Wind, it can be expected that
the Earth's magnetic field will become active this afternoon and will remain
so until tomorrow.
It is expected that HF propagation will be mildly degraded, but no major disruptions are expected. The effects should be that the higher bands close
a bit earlier and that the lower bands will be a bit noisy, especially
tonight.
From Tuesday onwards the Earth's magnetic field should be quiet to unsettled and fairly good propagation conditions can be expected.
