• MORSE FOR @

From David Pratt@2:250/355 to Fane on Fri Sep 1 00:51:20 2000
Quoting Fane to David Pratt <=-

FYI, Morse Academy v5.2r (the best Morse teaching programme, in my opinion, and for DOS!) maps .-... prosign AS to the @ sign. I don't
know if it is just this programme or not.

Morse v2.15 by David R Barker of GHZ Engineering, Holualoa, HI is my
favourite, Fane, and that also map @ as .-... I presume that it
was simply a matter of assigning a key for the "wait" symbol. On the
other hand, MorseCat (for Windows) by DK5CI (which uses the sound
card) does not have the @ key allocated.

We obviously need one now that @ is again in very common
    use.

I agree. It would be nice to see an ASCII type standard encompassing
a LOT of currently missing symbols that could be internationally recognized, beyond local use. But who decides? I would say that if
the ARRL published it in QST, it would be widely accepted.

Might I suggest you approach the ARRL, Fane? I have e-mailed them
myself but they merely said there was no code sequence for @. It does
need a few people to ask them in order to set the wheels in motion.

"Oubliette" - If I remember French from my schooldays, that means
"forgetful", but I can't work out its significance. Maybe it is me
that is suffering from oubliette. Hi!

    Hello Al -

I would suggest that di-dah-di-di-dah might be a possibility. That
is the very old separation symbol (used to separate whole numbers
from factions), but that has long since been superseded by the
    dash (dah-di-di-di-dah).

I should have said "dah-di-di-di-di-dah", of course - sorry for the typo.

Boy do I remember "da-da-ditty-dah-dah", (as we used to call it),
    from my Navy Days.

That seems to have evolved to be understood as an exclamation mark nowadays, but officially it is listed as a comma.

May I suggest that you drop the ARRL an email. They
    love to champion these things

You're joking, of course, Al. I have e-mailed them about it, but all they can come up with is just sending "at". I guess it needs a few more people requesting they do something about it. Try e-mailing n1kb@arrl.org with copies
    to k1zz@arrl.org and w6rod@arrl.org

K1ZZ is secretary of IARU and Secretary of ARRL, and W6ROD is supposed to be ARRL International Affairs Vice-President. I suspect their attitude is "don't rock the boat" as it will give them some work to do!

    Hi David,

How does one get a copy of Morse v2.15 or MorseCat? I have Morse Academy and a
couple of others for Qbasic, but none of them use the sound card only the lil pc speaker. It would be great to have a little more "sophisticated" pgm to play with. Love that Morse Code. I was a railroad telegrapher as well as military radio operator and I have always appreciated really good Morse operators.

    Regards,

    Jerry

    That is a "DASH".

That's about as short as you can get, and actually makes sense (to
    me).

But it might not make sense if you did not speak English (or American). As there are Morse sequences for punctuation, accented letters and even Esperanto,
there should be one for @. We use "es" for "and" and "de" for "from" when all said and done.

I have them on here for Freq (at times in Origin) as MORSCT10.ZIP (273k) and MORSE21.ZIP (53k), but I will e-mail them to you, Jerry.

MorseCat uses the sound board, but Morse21 is for DOS but is excellent.

    David,

Thank you very much for taking the time to send those pgms to me. I unzipped and had them both up and running in a couple of mins. They look good and sound
great. So far I haven't had time to play with the different functions of either, but I am looking forward to doing that real soon. My ten year son is really going to like these as well. Thanks again!
