BB is pushing 80 and isn't as active as he once was. Listen to his
old recordings, especially "Live at The Regal." If you're only
gonna have one B.B. King album, that's the one.

I'll look for it... I've heard a bunch of his stuff over the years but not sure how far back I've went.

I've not heard that but I have listened to a group of his stuff.
yes his phrasing is nice and he does often find the "right" note.
But it's always the same "right" note. BB's playing gets
    redundant after a while...

I agree with you that B.B.'s playing gets redundant after a while.
However, if you like the blues at all, you really owe it to yourself
to pick up a copy of "Live At the Regal". It is, as Bill indicated,
probably his finest recorded performance and a truly essential blues
album for any fan of the genre.

    Just my two cents....

Listen to "Live At The Regal" and you'll find out why he's
listed in the company he is; What places him in that company
is his phrasing. He can come in and kill you with one note,
because it's the *right* note, where some wanker will will
play 20 and still not get it.

Absolutely right on both counts. "Live At the Regal" is *the*
essential B.B. King album, and a truly timeless blues classic.

Also, you nailed the essence of B.B.'s mastery - his phrasing.
Reminds me of Count Basie, who could sit at the piano conducting the
band, then suddenly just pop a hand down to the keyboard and hit
either a note, a chord, or a short phrase that was nothing short of
    perfect.
I'll never forget the first time I experienced this at a live
performance by the Count Basie Orchestra. The band was well into the
first piece before Basie's hand touched the keyboard and then out of
nowhere he plays two notes and, ...well, it was so exquisite - so
utterly perfect - that I very nearly wet myself! ;-)

I'm sure someone else has mentioned it, but B.B. and Clapton have a duo album calle "Cruiseing with the King" or something like it. It's on my b.day list for
    sure. ;>

I'm always amazed that the people who don't get B.B. miss that. But I think it's mostly people who have only heard him as an old man, after he started singing more and playing less.

I hadn't made that connection, but I can see it. He can make Lucille cry big ol' tears.

I spotted a review in our local alternative paper. Clapton is driving a big caddy convertable with a grinning B.B. in the back seat. I saw B.B. in concert once at our primo, uptown auditorium. A few fans came to the edge of the stage when he first came on. B.B. started passing out happy face buttons to anyone that held up a hand. On anyone else it would have looked tacky. After he'd emptied his pockets of those buttons, he and Lucille did what they do best.
