From Dale Shipp@1:261/1466 to All on Fri Sep 4 01:25:02 2020
I wonder if someone could give me a simple statement as to what the
discussion in this echo is about? I have sampled a few messages, but am
    still at a complete loss.

I managed to find that message in my data base, but it did not lead to
any other understanding. I don't know what Telegram is. I only know
telegram as an old method of sending short messages, mostly in the 19th
century and some in the 20th. Although Western Union still exists,
their telegrams are not used much. Hence, It is certain that the
Telegram mentioned here is referring to something else entirely.

Telegram is a messaging app with a focus on speed and security, it's super-fast, simple and free. You can use Telegram on all your devices at the same time - your messages sync seamlessly across any number of your phones, tablets or computers.

With Telegram, you can send messages, photos, videos and files of any type (doc, zip, mp3, etc), as well as create groups for up to 200,000 people or channels for broadcasting to unlimited audiences. You can write to your phone contacts and find people by their usernames. As a result, Telegram is like SMS and email combined - and can take care of all your personal or business messaging needs. In addition to this, we support end-to-end encrypted voice calls.

It's like BBS, allows you to read and write in Fido Echoconferences, but the Telegram application is used for access.
It also makes it possible to broadcast Telegram groups or channels in the read-write mode to Fido.
Also, with some restrictions, the gate allows you to exchange private messages between Telegram users and sysops of the Fido network.

    Have nice nights.

    This describes it quite nicely:

Stas of 2:460/5858 developed some code that adapts to the

The idea is to make echomail accessible on a smartphone. Think

Yes.. TgM requires a phone number that can receive the initial
registration passcode as a text to create an account.

As for relevance to fidonet, the TgM gate that Stas @2:460/5858
has produced moves messages between the traditional FTN
environment and TgM. The idea is that a TgM user can have
quick and simple access to echomail on a smartphone.

The TgM+gate approach is not much different what Jamnntp does
to bring echomail to newsreader users.

But unlike nntp or point-softare, TgM only requires one
registration to get activated, and then if you have the TgM app
installed on either a tablet, pc or smartphone, you can switch
between any of those devices and be totally sync'd on all of
    them at any time.

That's great. To make Stas' job easier, and to give yourself

If I had to put on my moderator hat I would do that from the fido side. So far I haven't had to do that and I don't see that becoming an issue.

Then, give Stas the heads up and he would attach his Fido2telebot to them.

I don't actually run telegram myself, or any messaging app so I don't know these things at all. In this case someone else would need to create the groups or whatever is needed to make this possible. You could do that if you are so inclined for one or all of those areas. :)

Of course. The Telegram gate only came to my attention not
long ago. The whole concept is still quite new to me. This
echo has been a sort of 1st experiment for the last month or
so. I'm using TgM with the DT (desktop) version, and the
    results are pretty good.

The concept is probably ready for prime time; that is, more
    echos! :)

I don't see every echo suitable for this though. It's really up
    to a moderator to decide.

I see that you are settled with HotdogEd. Tapping on a virtual
keyboard in a reply like this one would give me sore finger
joints. :D But, the whole idea is to a have handy portable
access to the echos to read. Replying is totally optional.

    07 ᥭ 20 16:15, Alan Ianson -> August Abolins:

I moderate the following areas. The good folks in charge of TgM are welcome in any of these if they choose.

    DOS
    FIDO-REQ

These have now started gating like private groups in Telegram. August added to them. All members of the group can add others to the group. I can do it in open groups, but it is fraught with SPAM.
As I create other echo conferences, I will do the same.

    Have nice nights.
    Stas Mishchenkov.

That's great. To make Stas' job easier, and to give yourself
good moderator control of users, create the groups on Telegram

    Better myself. :)

yourself - I would suggest as PRIVATE groups. Then, give Stas
the heads up and he would attach his Fido2telebot to them.

It is enough to tell me the username in Telegram so that I can make it an administrator.

That would be nice. It's a great sounding idea. But with only the one echo, it's kind of difficult to see it truly working well.

I think it is worth creating an open GATE2FIDO group and to link it to the echo conference of the same name.

From the various messages I've seen here the past few days, it looks to be working. I figured that it was a relatively new program. A definite step up I believe from a program I vaguely remember from years ago that gated to and from email through Juno, I believe. I could never get that to work right myself.

The concept is probably ready for prime time; that is, more
    echos! :)

I would think so. That would be the true test, seeing if it sorted multiple echos correctly.

I don't see every echo suitable for this though. It's really up
    to a moderator to decide.

    That is always the case.

I see that you are settled with HotdogEd. Tapping on a virtual keyboard in a reply like this one would give me sore finger
joints. :D But, the whole idea is to a have handy portable
access to the echos to read. Replying is totally optional.

It can be awkward, but I'm getting more used to it.

Apparently, I am now "in" the gated DOS and FIDO-REQ groups on TgM. I quickly noticed that the groups can be sorted into Folders. I now have a folder with:

    FUTURE4FIDO
    DOS
    FIDO-REQ

    Nice 'n' neat, and uncluttered.

Before that I freaked out.. and thought I'd end up with a mixed list of a Users and Groups with no way to identify just the Fido groups.

Hmmm. THEGATE2FIDO would be cool, because there is no other than "the" gate. ;)

How 'bout a read-only (via supergroup) group on the Telegram side that has sufficient information of all the currently gated echos. Read-only would be a good way to thwart spammers, trolls, and stupid questions.

A moderator could then optionally manage the salient content/echo updates from the FTN side.

I'm just considering aspects that would help minimize too much administrative and moderator-like WORK for you.

    Hi, August!

    10 ᥭ 20 05:14, August Abolins -> Stas Mishchenkov:

When did Fido2telebot first go live?

I don't remember the exact date, but about a year and a half ago.

If you could assign your work a version number, what would it be at this time?

    Let's count together.
First, one of the nodes asked to help him make a transfer of his netmail on a perl to his telegram. I made it so that he could answer from Telegram. This is how it all started.
Then I realized that a UUencoded file can be sent by netmail. I became very interested in such possibilities and made myself a simple gate for CRIMEA.TALK and some other echo conferences.
Then the subscribers of PVT.ZONA got interested, which had already gated to the e-mail list. Together with them, for some time, the gate grew with opportunities and errors were corrected. A little later, the members of the fidonet.online group joined and an echo conference of the same name appeared. With their participation, changes and additions were also made for some time. For a while, I did not change anything and the gate worked for a long time in the form that the subscribers of this echo found. You know what happened next.
    It's about a0.0.4 version. ;)

Now I have radically changed the way of sending messages to Fido and am finishing a new way of sending messages to Telegram. Then we will return to sending a netmail from Telegram to Fido.

    Have nice nights.
    Stas Mishchenkov.

Yes.. it's like each echo can have its own cloud storage accessible
    to everyone.

Now if only there was something we could use for the BBS side and offline readers. :)

I can restore sending files from Telegram to Fido in the form of UUe. ;) Although, I strongly doubt that it will be better than now in the form of URL.

    Have nice nights.
