• Upcoming changes to Hub 3.

From deon@21:2/116 to All on Tue Sep 19 12:51:44 2023
    Howdy,

This note is primarily for Hub 3 users - but others are welcome to read on as well, it might be of use for you.

Over the last couple of years, I've been created a new mailer "clrghouz" and I am taking it to the next level.

For Hub 3 nodes, that means in about a weeks (or two) time, I'll be moving you over to clrghouz, and retiring my hpt/bink fidohub. For 3/184, and 3/185, you are already using clrghouz - so thank you for your help. You've helped me identify a few things in the background that needed fixing, and I am sure there are a few more though :)

So for Hub 3 nodes (except 3/184 and 3/185), please make sure you are using n3.z21.bbs.dege.au port 24554 (or port 24553 for binkps) as your hub address (unless you are connecting via tor or zerotier - those details wont change). Currently the DNS address is pointing to fidohub, but when I have made the change, it'll point to clrghouz.
You can make this change today, if you arent using it.

You are also welcome to log into the web interface (now if you want), and "claim" your BBS, this will enable you to control your configuration when clrghouz is active as your hub. Let me know if any of your details are not correct. The web address is https://clrghouz.bbs.dege.au

When I've made the change, I'll post a message here just before I make the change, and then again after - and if you receive both messages, then your config is good to go (and you can manage it in the web interface). If you dont get the second message, then let me know via email or matrix and I'll take a look.

For 3/184 and 3/185, when I make the change, the hub will be sending you mail from 3/100 not 3/2744 as it is currently - so you will have to update your BBS config - but only do that after I announce when I actually will move the hub.

Clrghouz is now loading fidonet echos (albeit slowly), and has now replaced fidohub for tqwnet, micronet, gamenet (although I think that is dead?), and a FTN feed for dovenet if anybody wants to hook up to dovenet. If you are running an othernet, I'm happy to load it into clrghouz as well, as a hub or a node.

So if you are after another feed for fsx or another network that I have in clrghouz, you are welcome to send me a netmail and I'll enable your FTN to receive the other networks echoareas as well. (You may need to apply to the othernet first, and get assigned an address.)

    Any questions please ask.

I just created a login and registered my BBS, but afterwards I've
noticed that my BBS has already been in the list.

Could you delete my second entry, ID 1829 and maybe link ID 221 to my account?
    Thank you very much!

    For hub 3 nodes...

For 3/184, and 3/185, you are already using clrghouz - so thank you for your help. You've helped me identify a few things in the background that needed fixing, and I am sure there are a few more though :)

I'm starting to move the configuration over to clrghouz.

For nodes that Hub 3 can NOT poll, I'll be changing you to "write only", so the old hub 3 will no longer pack mail for you. (Dont worry, any new mail is sent to clrghouz, and it *will* pack mail for you - so when I've updated the DNS, you'll get any mail that was received on the old hub - well that's the theory anyway... :)

For nodes that Hub 3 can poll, after I've done all the nodes that apply above, I'll manually poll you to empty the old queue, and disable you (so you might see password errors - but that should be expected). Shortly after, when I update the DNS you'll start to get mail from the new Hub. It should only be about an hour or so downtime...

Once I'm running on clrghouz, I'll post another message here to confirm that I've finished (or if something screwed up) - so if you dont see another message from me in 24hrs or so, connect with me via email so I can see what happened.

Once on clrghouz, you can manage your many of your own settings - subscriptions, passwords, host and ports to poll, etc. So if you have claimed your BBS on clrghouz, you can do that at anytime... If you havent setup a user and claimed your BBS, you'll need to do that first before you can manage your settings.

    Any questions, please ask ;)

I've moved everything over to Hub 3.

I've noticed a couple of problems which I'll work on tomorrow (its late today). Mail should be flowing between the nodes on Hub 3, but nothing will be flowing to the other Hubs until I've got this fixed.

Remember, change your host to poll to n3.z21.bbs.dege.au port 24554, if it isnt using that already. Some nodes might still be using the old "fidohub" address - that will answer now, but you'll get password failures...

I'll provide an update tomorrow when I've fixed the issue flowing mail to the other hubs.

OK, the small issue has been fixed, and Hub 3 is now live on clrghouz.

Mail should be flowing around the net, and to all nodes in Hub 3.

There still appear to be some nodes who are polling with the old address - they'll need to update to get new mail, I'll send them an email today.

As a reminder, the Hub is still 21:3/100, and can be contacted on n3.z21.bbs.dege.au, port 24554.

Yell out if you are having any challenges, and email/netmail me and I'll take a look.

    Woot!

Mail should be flowing around the net, and to all nodes in Hub 3.

I'll check things at NET 1 tonight and confirm all is well ( I expect this will be the case) :)

    Great job Deon!

When you have some time, could you have a look at the NET 3 stats you were sending me for the website, they seemed to have stopped at the time of the cutover. If you're able, it would be great to get them again.

Yup, I'll need to write them :)

What I might do is give you an iframe to put on your website - would that be better? (Then the stats will be real-time.)

in this case having the txt file would work better for me - but thanks for the offer :)
