• Buccaneer door game

Those who follow reddit r/bbs may have seen this post:

    https://www.reddit.com/r/bbs/comments/1b626zo/curious_if_anyone_remember_my_fathers_door_game/

The post is by 'graffd03', the son of Alan Graff who was a sysop in Ohio and author of BBS door game Buccaneer. graffd03 asked if anybody remembers his father's game and got several responses from people who played it, and who are playing it now.

Buccaneer v2.10 can be found in BUCK210.ZIP, available in BBS archives so it may already be on your BBS. ;)

The registration key generator has been lost, but fortunately it was not too difficult to create a keygen. Source for keygen can be found in the reddit thread, or BUCKKEY.ZIP has been uploaded to my BBS and 20forbeers.com:1337. I also have Buccaneer on the Door Games menu of my BBS, Another Millennium, another.tel if you want to take a look. (pretty smooth shameless plug, amirite?)

The reddit thread is quite touching, it's nice to see the connection to this game and the legacy.

I just saw this thread on Reddit but didn't, well, read it yet. I'll have to make time to check it out tomorrow on lunch. Sadly I know nothing of the game but now's a great time to learn about it!

Thanks! I went ahead and grabbed it from your BBS which, BTW, looks pretty sharp! I did have a problem after I downloaded the file. I got stuck with
a repeating Press ENTER to continue prompt. I had to hang up. Sorry about that.

To anyone else whose tried installing it and found it slow, there is a bit
in the documentation about running the door under multitasking.
Technically, my dosemu session is not being mutitasked within itself, but I suppose it should be considered as a multitasking environment since the OS
    it runs under is.

Anyway, the OUTBUFF settings the documentation mentions really work! It
    sped the output up exponentially!

The documentation does not mention what the values in the CFG file are.
FYI, line one is the path to your drop file. Also, if your system creates DORINFO# files where # = the node number, Buccaneer is going to want your
batch program to rename the file to DORINFO1 before the program starts.

Now to get it set up to run in a multinode environment. It does not appear
to support that, so I am guessing I will need to do some magic in the batch file that calls the door so that (1) the config file it finds points to the correct drop file path, and (2) the BBS can let other nodes know that the
    door is occupied. ;)

Dropped carrier is no problem, thanks for letting me know about the bug after downloading the file. It's certainly interesting the variety of weird bugs that pop up when you mix together 30-40 years of software!

Now to get it set up to run in a multinode environment.

Good thinking about multinode capability. My system is setup so each node generates a DORINFO1.DEF file, so the drop files work, but it hadn't occurred to me that the door has its own data file and may not be able to safely run multiple sessions concurrently. I know better, but totally missed that! Thanks for bringing that up, and sharing the other configuration info.

It is my assumption that it may not be multinode capable, since it only has
one config file, does not appear to be able to accept a different config
file name on the command line, and the drop file path is hardcoded into the config file.

I didn't actually test it. Also, if someone was running it under a more
modern BBS package, like Synchronet, there may be a way around it. At the
very least, I think SCFG has a switch for multinode.

One thing you probably should try is the /N switch. There is a note in the documents that says if you are not running QBBS/SBBS/RA you will need that switch so that the door does not look for a file specific to those systems.

I am not sure why it won't run locally, though. I did not encounter any problems locally once I fixed the pathname in the BUCK.CFG file.

Is the door written in Turbo Pascal? When I first started setting up a new BBS, I encountered some errors like that with DOS doors, and I read many of such errors happened with door games written in Turbo Pascal because modern CPUs are too fast, and there are a few programs that will patch Turbo Pascal programs so they can run on modern PCs without generating the error.

Ponder, if you're looking at that rabbit hole, perhaps just add an enter to
the last line of the file. Used to be a problem with some things not liking the EOF being the end of the last line, and liking an empty line with a CR at the end of the file.

end of the file" - Borland Pascal 7 help

Hm. Could I need to add something to the buck.cfg file? I've tried using a different dropfile type.

what exactly are you putting into BUCK.CFG on the first line? just the directory and not a filename?

it also didn't seem to like me removing the -----'s from the default config..

    c:\ele\node1\

with the node in each appropriate buck??.cfg file, then I copy buck??.cfg to buck.cfg. I also tried with /L which should ignore that entry and create
    it's own dropfile (c:\ele\doors\buck\dorinfo1.def).

well, i've managed to get it to work with mystic using netfossil

it won't work if you don't cd to it's directory
    i used the /D param
BUCK.CFG first line was just c:\mystic\temp1\ no other changes

    if i can't break it i can't very well find out what's wrong ;)

that said, it's kind of buggy. you can easily lock the door up by just pressing enter at a prompt without typing anything.

I can't get away from an RTE100 error... Any ideas? Even

Is the door written in Turbo Pascal? When I first started setting up
a new BBS, I encountered some errors like that with DOS doors, and I
read many of such errors happened with door games written in Turbo
Pascal because modern CPUs are too fast, and there are a few programs
that will patch Turbo Pascal programs so they can run on modern PCs
    without generating the error.

Pretty certain that is the 200 error. Here is an odd fact... I am
starting to run into that issue now in a dosemu instance. However,
unlike the other times I have run into it, this time it only happens
sometimes. I can try to start the program again and it may run.

Yeah, I'm running Ele, which does create exitinfo.bbs, just like QBBBS,SBBS and RA. I tried /N, supposedly that fixed it for codefenix, but not me. /D didn't help any either.

    Shurato,
Another person here posted that RTE 100 likely means that the program is reading past the end of a file. Is it possible that you have accidentally deleted a line from the BUCK.CFG file?

If not, it is possible that the drop file does not contain the number of
lines the program expects. Someone else mentioned the KEY file, too, but
it sounds like you may have already looked at that one.

I would also be sure that the path you entered on line 1 is
in ALL CAPS and ends with a '\'. Not sure that would be the issue but
since the default file was set up that way I kept mine that way and didn't
run into the issue you are having.

That's odd.. Though, I wonder if running one of those TP patch programs on the executable could fix it.

I brought back the original file and actually added a line to the end.

I've tried using door.sys as well as dorinfo1.def and turning on and off
    the usage of exitinfo.bbs.

Still getting RTE100 even when loading the game locally, once I enter my name and security level. It shouldn't be the drop file. The only thing I changed
in the buck.cfg is the path, kept it capitalized and am definitely pointing
to the right directory, which wouldn't matter when running with /L.

well, i've managed to get it to work with mystic using netfossil

I find RLFOSSIL has plenty of foibles. I run a batch file from it that then runs the entire BBS rather than try and have it load each time you need it,
or it was very unreliable. So my RLFOSSIL command line tends to look like..

    RLFOSSIL 0 1 C:\BBS\BBS.BAT

Then you can just do whatever you want inside the batch file, without having
to worry about things not being able to find a FOSSIL.
