• Friday, summer-ish and the weekend

From Avon@21:1/101 to All on Fri Dec 15 12:54:16 2023
Well it's a Friday afternoon over here in New Zealand, and technically we're in summer but so far it's bloody cold, and even on a day when 26 Celsius is forecast we've had wind, rain and cold temps so far.

I'm working from home today but am bunking off a bit to play BBS during lunch and look at some overdue admin etc.

The weekend will likely involve mowing lawns, some driving about in the car and perhaps family over for a meal.

Woke up way too early today and could probably have used another 2-3 hours extra sleep compared to what I got, but hopefully tonight.

Hope all is well with you :)

    Best, Paul

I didn't realize you were about a full day ahead of me. From the timestamp in your message, it was Thursday afternoon here (west coast US). :)

    That sounds good. :)
I've worked a bit extra this week, so it looks like I'll be able to go home from work a couple hours earlier than usual tomorrow. My wife is staying over at her parents' house tomorrow evening and will be out Saturday, since she has some work stuff she needs to take care of early Saturday morning - And I know it might sound corny, but I miss my wife when she's away. I'll probably work on some of my BBS stuff though, and maybe play some games.

As far as gaming, the other day I was curious to run the Amiga version of the old Lemmings game, and I found one for download online, complete with an Amiga emulator for Windows, all set up to run Lemmings with a double-click. I like this version of Lemmings. I'm curious to see if I can find more Amiga games now, since I mainly played IBM/PC games back in the day and didn't have much exposure to Amigas.

It's been hot here, had the air con on for half the day, hoping it doesn't put too much on our electricity bill. Muggy to, it rained this afternoon, it got over 30 degrees in Reuben's room, it's not 9:30ish and it's still 26 degrees in there :(

Sounds like most mornings for me.. although way early for you is probably much earlier than way early for me :) I guess it's what your used to.

Hope all is well with you :)

Stuff is good here. Got a lot of work done on my web frontend, I feel like I'm past the hard parts, and now it's tidying up and tweaks to improve the user experience. Alpha has been a good help with that.

By the way, did you happen to get any netmails from me? I think it's working now, but I have a feeling a bunch i sent you were incorrect, and may have got eaten. They were just test messages, so nothing important.

It is Friday morning here in Kentucky, USA. We are less than a week from
the beginning of astronomical winter and the nightly temperatures are reflecting this (getting below 32F/0C). The daytime temps the past few
days have been a litle warmer than normal (around 50F) but that will
change by Monday when we are expecting a little snow.

Good to hear about warmer weather activities. ;)

Not summer here obvs, and his weekend we're looking at typical December weather: mid 60's F (~16C) -- and some rain next week.

The rain potentially sucks, as we are traveling for the holidays, starting next Saturday. A little storm doesn't really stop the planes, but it adds to the general chaos of travel...

    Cheers!

Sunday afternoon now, we're expecting some rain and thunder later today, I did get some lawns done on Friday, some gardening done this morning, and yesterday some traveling around in the EV to check out some second hand / op shops... looking for something called uranium glass... which apparently is quite collectible... so it was a fun day.

I walk my dogs in the morning wearing flip flops[1] and a hoodie.
People wonder how I'm not cold. Living 10 years a couple of blocks from
the beach in San Francisco endeared me to cold, foggy weather.

I could walk to the beach, hear the waves breaking from my living room
and hear the Seals barking at Seal Rock.

I lived, worked and went to school in the Fog Belt on the west side of
the city, in the ironically named Sunset district. We had one summer
where we didn't see the sun all year. You'd start to get depressed,
then realize that if you drove a mile east, you'd get sunny weather.

The next year, I remember being at Ocean Beach the day after
Thanksgiving in a t-shirt. Not a cloud in the sky, and almost 70
    degrees. Odd.

Wow! What is the weather normally like if that is the threshold for cold? 110+?

I couldn't imagine wearing a sweater or a sock cap/beanie over 60 degrees! Then again, here in Wisconsin we have both sides of a spectrum. Monday will be 0F and there will still be a few straggling crazy people wearing shorts. My father-in-law is one of them. ;)

Wow. Couple of Cali residents complaining about the weather. I was born there, and came out every summer till I was a teenager to visit my dad.
It was hilarious when it was 50-60F people were out in full winter
jackets and I was running around in a T-shirt.

You should see San Franciscans when the temp gets into the 90s
(fahrenheit, of course). Oh, the complaints!

When I lived in San Francisco, I lived in the Fog Belt, an area that
extended about a mile inland from the ocean side. I think the warmest I
ever saw was in the low 80s - and it wasn't in the summer!

    So basically, they're only happy when it's 75F to 89F? ;)

I was brought up summers in the Burlingame area, some 30-40 years ago. Rest of the year I was in Wisconsin. I remember at times it was "chilly" at best, but not what I would consider cold by any means. I also don't remember it getting all that blazing hot either. Whereas, Wisconsin can go anywhere from -30F up to 100F or so. It's still a shock and I've been here over 40 years.

Depends on the of year, of course, but yeah: usually in the
90s up to 100+ and humid. I made the mistake of taking a
train up to North India during December with only Mumbai-appropriate
    clothes. I was cold. :-D

I bet. Our family and some friends took a trip to Arizona last year in June. It was 105F all week, but I was only hot when directly in the sun. Otherwise, in the shade it wasn't bad at all compared to 90F and humid as all get out like it gets here in WI.

They're not lying. I just got done snow blowing for 2.5 hours. We've gotten probably 12" so far and it's still snowing. :/

I think the last time we got this much snow in one day here was 10+ years ago, though. So it's not like it's all that common. Luckily it was on a Friday, and as construction workers we decided to take the day off. With the temp dropping out on Sunday to below zero, a 5-day weekend is very possible. :)

I went there, and SoCal, in September of last year. I agree, it didn't
feel as hot unless you were out in the Sun. That said, one thing I did
notice was how quickly my mouth dried out, and how quickly the water I
was using to clean the desert mud off of something dried up!

We went to Peoria, so there wasn't a lot of desert mud. We also went to Jerome, which was pretty cool seeing everything build on the side of a mountain, and Williams, which was basically just a tourist attraction. Either way, not a lot of actual desert, so we didn't get much of what you experienced.

Yeah, me too. I lived in Orange Country for 25 years, now 15 years in Riverside County. I travel to the bay area *many* times a year (in

Oh nice. I was born in Redwood City, at Kaiser hospital. Only time we really ever went back to that area was to go to Malibu Grand Prix for some mini golf, arcade action, and race some cars around the track, but looks like that has been closed down for at least 10 years now.

There was a Malibu Grand Prix in my area, which I thought was fun, but unfortunately they closed. I think it was at least 10 years ago here too.

Yeah, my office is in Foster City (there a couple of days a week, most weeks), so I stay at my daughter's apartment in Berkeley while up there. Flying up again in a few hours. It's a sunny 65F day outside here in Riverside County at the moment while it's 56F and raining in Berkeley. :-)

I've mostly visited Riverside (for work, as there's a warehouse there where we have an install) in the summer, and... would not recommend.

It's a dry heat, generally, but the only reason it's fairly pleasant when it's 110F outside is because one is outside of air conditioning for about ten minutes a day, generally.

But Bay Area weather is generally nice. I love a day with a layer of fog above, as it's just so consistent, and I'm not worrying about a migraine due to sunlight.

Though it _does_ get sunny the further away you get from the ocean.

Which is what's generally nice about Germany. Sun rarely comes out, and still rarely snows. Well, at least in the parts nearish to the Netherlands. I imagine the Alps might be a bit different.
