• High Speed in Ithaca, NY area (finally)

From Janis Kracht@1:261/38 to All on Sun Oct 1 18:37:36 2023
We were informed by a competing ISP in Slaterville Springs, NY (~10 miles from Ithaca, NY) that we can get 1 GIG down | 1 GIG up with ThePoint ISP.. So we are switching from Spectrum.. should be a LOT better for speed and service.

I expect the change to come in a week or two, or sooner.

We will go from the present 330.9 Mbps download/11.3 Mbps upload to a gig in both directions. I'm happy :) The fellow who sold this to us told me that
Spectrum was a bit bothered. Good. <grin>

    Take care,
    Janis

No idea - I was glad that I'll be allowed to run servers... Since we moved from Kentucky back to New York, I have had to purchase a 'business account' as opposed to a personal account to the Internet to be allowed to run any servers at all. So IPv6 wasn't on my mind, but I would be shocked if I don't get it.

    Take care,
    Janis

Lol... who knows, all I know is the guy knocked on my door and my dog didn't growl or seem bothered at all.. that was a good sign, I thought ... :)

    And Michiel would be devastated...

Not sure what gave anyone the idea that you ran servers..? I have Spectrum as well, and I've been doing just fine over here for probably 15+ years with them, but I didn't go out of my way to tell them I ran servers either. They don't block ports, they do indeed supply native IPv6, and they've never bothered me, even after upgrading to their gig tier not too long ago.

As long as you're not bogging down their service with tons of traffic, or making any kind of money from your servers/services, they would never know or notice.. or care. But you can't call them up and say, "Hey, I'm running servers here, can you do this or that for me?" either.

    Regards,
    Nick
