• Split trying

From Gert Andersen@2:230/150 to Janis Kracht on Sun Nov 6 11:16:52 2011
    Hello Janis!

I have trying to split some files for lnx4games with both zip and rar, zip split them into zip z01 z02 but winrar doesnot liek to use number for rar files
it more makes the name to .parth1 etc and extension as .rar instead of .rar .r01 etc.

Then like htick not to read the file_id.diz file from the first file. The comments neither been like to be added.

It then either to first make one big file and then try to split this file to smaller files.

like zip to file.zip (15mb) then split it to 1.44mb in a try.

    Take care,
    Gert

    Hi Gert,

This really belongs in IFDC, not in here..

    No kidding :(

Are these _WIN_ files? Don't send them through LINUX4KIDS, or LNX4GAMES, please :)

Chances are I already have them from the author or have decided not to release them for one reason or another, or I am about to realease them!! Send me an an email about them first, ok? <sigh>

    Take care,
    Janis

It is linux files as tar.gz and .gz + tar.bz2 files I like to be zipped or rar packed in split to smaller files.

The files is get by linux files. Where I have download them for linux, if I got
a zip I checking of what kind the files there is in the .zip or .rar so if it not is linux format of .tar .tar.gz .gz or tar.bz2 I tell you of them, else is I to try to see how big in bytes it will get after use of zip and rar they will
get and if they perhaps can be split into smaller files.

I have tried to use zip the files to make then smaller if they is over 12-13MB,
the same by rar (winrar), but then do winrar only do it with make .parth1.rar files, where zip make it as .zip .z01 and both zip -z and rar c don't like to add comment to the files. Only for lnx4 fdn files.

    Take care,
    Gert

    My personal view is that:

    1. Unless the files are above 25mb don't bother, just leave them as is.
    2. If target system is for Linux use tar with option z and just add in to a .zip file with the file_id.diz.
    3. Keep all file_id.diz simple, e.g., do NOT add in leading spaces or special characters as most of us can not (or do not have the time) to clean up the file
    descriptions manually.

    Reasons:

Most of us use the internet for file transfer.
In the event someone is still using a modem, sending a lot of small files never
allows the modem (or the internet router for that matter) to reach maximum speed, so keeping them complete helps in throughput.

    I would sooner download a 100mb file than 80+ files of 1.4mb.

Just look at your logs for proof.

    Hello Gert!

As a follow on from previous msg, can you stop including the name of the file within the descriptions. Just a waste of space as the description clearly relates to the file name, also do not hard code returns in, eg, just let it free flow. That way all of the bbs system can handle the descriptions as easily
as possible. Most of use use the KISS principle on descriptions as many of the bbs's stil in use today have limited processing for descriptions including
    mbse with no editing tools.

Although I have not checked, I am (assuming) that all these programs are for Linux and are fully self contained (do NOT require any additional libraries) as
the source code is not included.

As a rule I prefer the source code included so that it can be checked for any nasties.

Sorry for all the comments, but I really do thank you for your efforts.
