• The next files for AA25A games.

From Gert Andersen@2:230/150 to Janis Kracht on Sun Mar 23 18:42:54 2014
    Hello Janis!

The next 3-4 files for AddIn to America's Army 2.5 Assist will I make some .info and small zip files for and see hos they will look and be as rar split files the first of them will be the maps file.
It will be as 25Amaps.r* [1 to 13] by using 17024 for split - if just using 7024 will it end up as 30 files.
The zip file could then in only zip -9 25AmapsW.zip got to be 56M.
The next file for addon is textures.7z and it will be 25AttrsW.zip = 210M so info file in zip without using L/M/W and info as extension with OS letter.
Then will I make a OS letter for each OS of the file.
Then is there just 2 big files again there is at 313M and 516M.
Alle those big files will I for Linux , MAC + Windows put the full zip file on my system for downloas via my GamesNet network gmsnet, and linux for both too on lnx4 games.
So can nodes and sysops download them from here.
The information extra inf files will in its text then tell of this and that the
.7z files can be download on the authors homepage + the project homepage.

    Take care,
    Gert

Is all of this really prudent for FIDONet? Seems like way too much for something that is accessible over broadband where it belongs ... even the part you're hatching out is overly large IMHO my bandwidth won't suffer but others may, I'm just saying. I stopped hatching A/V files due to ridiculous large size
as these ... Janis may have an opinion here (g)

    YES, I do.

I really feel that games especially should be limited to say 30-31Meg, and that's pushing it in my mind.

I don't know any linux sysops who do not have full internet access so for them,
if they want huge files, they should get them online, not through fidonet.

As I've mentioned before, I've decided recently that I won't hatch out any file
in any of the FDNs over here (PDN, UtilNet, RAR, WIN_FDN, etc.) that are larger
than 30M. I get email requests in every day from authors of games to send out their files in WIN_GAME for game files that are half-a-gig, sometime bigger
:(, and I just delete them.

Gert is now sending .inf files to let people know where they can download huge files on his system, and that works much better than sending the traffic through fidonet's file distribution IMO. I won't even take the time to do that <grin>

    Take care,
    Janis

Yes she have as I know.
that I am doing is that I getting the big files in by email and looking at the files and testing, if the file is a good game file and not go over more than 15-20 split rar files and or is up 10MG as zip files is I send the files out. For some files for games can there be from 4 to 12 extra addons of data files to a game, and self if the main file is not more than 10M can the extra addon files be over a half giga in files, if the addon files is under 60M and between
up to 50-60M si the files been both zipped and split to not have more than 15 split files of 7024 bytes or 4-5 split of around 10M.
Is the extra addon file over 60M is I zip the file and split first to see how it looks, and the zip files been manually copied in to the file echo and I make
1-2 special .inf for the files for where to download the zip file or the addon file by it self.
And no bigger files is been hatched out that only the info file(s).

The old GamesNet from time back had that time from time to time right so big files sending out, but that time was the most nodes and sysop only had a isdn modem and V34 modem to get mail and game files by, and there was a special game
area for those big file over 10M and sometimes over 20M. Now have the most nodes and sysops Broadband and adsl from 2Mbit up to 20/30Mbit and some have somethhing like 100/100Mbit, or even higher with the new fiber cables networking.

Way pushing it (g) my Daily limit for APODs is 4MB, I intentionally drop the 10-35 MB video files they sometimes put up as just way over my limit.

Anyway, can I get a list of the file echoes these large files are coming thru so I can detach them? Por favor :)

It looks like the large files right now are coming through MACGAMES (nothing larger than 30M though), and from Gert, it would be LINUX4GAMES.

WIN_GAMES is also no larger than 30M (and that's very rare that it hits that large).

UTILLNX hasn't gone above 20M I think.. (again, rare)

PDNUNIX has a file that's 20M, again rare..

That's about all I can tell you right now.. hope that helps.

Correct as it is around 2mbit to 10mbit, my self has 20/2 - 20mbit download and
2mbit upload, self if i have asked my isp and they has told med that I could get 30/3 or 50/5 will it not do any for me than my normal working bandwidth will stay as 20/2 by the way my internet connection is done and work. If got another internet settings and connection could my bandwidth be made to up to fiber connection with 100/100 to 500/500 now, but I can only stay with 20/2 for

Yes and there was no real way of getting them all checked fine through, I was the Danish RC for GamesNet then and self if I in 2 years was out any connections and just has deal with my that time fidonet link there too was my link in Gamesnet, so that time as long he still was in fidonet got I home to once a week with 6-7 tapes for backup, and I have my fido and GamesNet mail on tape to him and he got mail from and all waiting fido and Games to me been then
copied on to my tapes. My link hastehn ISDN and I had V34 56K modem, when my fido link stopped I stopped too in fido for a year and just only had my system and bbs running to let it be weekly updated with new files. then got in to miss
fidonet and found out that to fido RC were still the one there one the same as I know that I stopped andwere Kaare Olsen, contact him on get back in fido with

    Hiya Gert....

A suggestion if I may. Why not send to Janis just an info file explaining to the end user where they could actually download the game on their own timeframe rather than sending out 4-5 condensed files onto the filebone. Your games will still get the exposure and in all honesty, save some diskspace on all involved.

so have you calculated (or even thought about) how long it takes to retransmit those huge files to numerous downlinks at only 512k-768k transmit speeds?

while i have 3M receive, my transmit is only ~512k... i have at least 5 nodes pulling all files areas so on days that i get eg: 100M, my system has to transmit 500M but at 512k speed that's 1/4th of your transmit speed... i won't even mention all the other traffic that my pipe has to carry as well... upgrade? not likely... we're lucky to have this out here 15mi (24km) from town...

So can nodes/sysop and users self get the small files for the addons and read the informations on where to get and download the big addons, and only files for MAC and windows + maybe Linux will in real bytes up to 30M og zip files and in split rar files.
I will on my system put both full zip file size and rar splitted file for the large addons, so whom there like to get the addons self use time for download and file request the files.

    Take care,
    Gert

    Hiya Gert....

A suggestion if I may. Why not send to Janis just an info file
explaining to the end user where they could actually download the
game on their own timeframe rather than sending out 4-5 condensed
    files onto the filebone.

why even do that if they are already available on the internet? i dare say possiblt even from several hundred sites without being broken into pieces... they're probably also available from several thousand newsgroup servers...

eg: America's Army distributed in the last week...

    https://www.google.com/search?q=america's+army+game

About 45600000 results with the first one being the US Army's official site for
the America's Army game that they created and distribute... it is also available on STEAM...

and these AA25ASSIST files? all they are, as monstrous as they are, is a GUI client to download, and install America's Army... they do also offer assistance
playing the game but still... what's so hard about clicking on a link to download the game from the originating site and running its installer?

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/aa25assist/

Your games will still get the exposure and in all honesty, save
    some diskspace on all involved.

the 25ASSIST files aren't even a game... besides, they've already got more exposure on the 'net than what little bit any FTN FDNs can contribute... [/realist]

    Just my opinion.... YMMV...

    same here, too...

My thoughts were why send any files other than one small file that includes .txt or .diz that explains an ftp site where those interested in these massive files can get them? Or FREQ. Sending one massive 200meg file as compared to 10 - 20meg files still has the same effect, 200megs of space on a person's system. The objective here is to reduce the total size of files being hatched on Janis' system to the general public where 90% just have them on their system and never play or use them. Call it an "advertising" file.

    Be well....

    Hello Janis!

    * An ongoing debate between Janis Kracht and Ben Ritchey rages on
    ...

The files coming through for Linux & windows relating to AA games is fully available on the internet.

There is no good reason for use to move them as well.

It should be pointed out that for most if not all of us that use broadband our download speed is considerably better than our upload speed e.g., a factor of 10 : 1 and I can see no purpose in jamming up our systems for such content that
is readily available else where and even worse games, ok it is not really but ...

I for one would prefer to turn this type of stuff off along with demo/crippled s/w etc.

Just my 4 pennies worth. Ok, OK may be 4.5.

files by, and there was a special game area for those big file over
10M and sometimes over 20M. Now have the most nodes and sysops
Broadband and adsl from 2Mbit up to 20/30Mbit and some have
somethhing like 100/100Mbit, or even higher with the new fiber
    cables networking.

so have you calculated (or even thought about) how long it takes to
retransmit those huge files to numerous downlinks at only 512k-768k
    transmit speeds?

Yes ad I self started with to have it. The nodes and sysops can then self deside of which file echo to get and then the files.
I have sevaral links for both Filegate files and other networks.

while i have 3M receive, my transmit is only ~512k... i have at least 5
nodes pulling all files areas so on days that i get eg: 100M, my system
has to transmit 500M but at 512k speed that's 1/4th of your transmit
speed... i won't even mention all the other traffic that my pipe has to
carry as well... upgrade? not likely... we're lucky to have this out
    here 15mi (24km) from town...

I send out with 2mbit and have for some network, as linuxnet and gmsnet about 15 downlinks, some of them is very slow on polling and getting mail, some have now nearly not polled in over a month and is not write a word to me on any thing, stopping in a network but just not have their fido system set up right to polls all uplinks so they playing around wit their mailer and mail system so
they forget all uplinks for info and setup to polling and fetch for mail.

    Take care,
    Gert
