    Hello Everybody,

Our beloved moderator, Bob Klahn, has died. Apparently
from a state of shock as he watched the Toledo Blue Hens
upend the Arkansas Razorbacks by the score of 16-12.

Bob Klahn, both Clintons, all Arkansas fans, RIP.

When Roy Witt died and I saw the first messages about it, I knew Witt
had so many enemies in Fido it would not have been beneath one or two
of them to start a rumor of that sort, taking advantage of Witt's absence
due to his illness. I stayed out of the first traffic over it waiting to
see if it would turn out to be real or not.

In this case, Klahn hasn't posted in Fido in quite some time, but that
isn't really unusual about him. He usually gets his head handed to him
by one or another of his Fidonet enemies, and lays low for a time till
he either thinks everyone's forgotten how wrong he was on an issue, or
he thinks up some new idiot-twist to it and comes charging back with
more nonsense, only to get his head handed to him once more.

This particular `sulk' has been of much longer duration than usual for
Klahn to do a disappearing act. Typically, he's back at it by now.
Especially in regard to the controversy so-called `black lives matter'
    stirred up.

This absence is not normal for him. Especially when seeing `my' name in
the *from* field in a message in his echo.

Something's wrong or he'd have come out swinging by now. Somebody should
check on him to see if he's all right.

Roy was an idiot. But so are we all. What made things confusing
was the way Roy's death was handled (or mishandled). Some people in
fidonet should have had more sense. Strangest case of a dead man
remaining alive (at least as a node) than anybody can remember.

In this case, Klahn hasn't posted in Fido in quite some time, but that isn't really unusual about him. He usually gets his head handed to him

The last reference I was able to find was a letter to the editor
in the Toldedo Blade newspaper, dated May 29, 2015, written by
Bob Klahn - dealing with the subject of the University of Toledo
    football team.

    http://www.toledoblade.com/Editorials/2015/05/29/Flag-on-the-play-1.html

Nothing wrong with praying at football games. I watch quarterbacks
and receivers do it all the time, trying to complete a Hail Mary pass
on the last play of the game. And sometimes it works. But only for
the Atlanta Falcons when playing the New Orleans Saints.

This particular `sulk' has been of much longer duration than usual for Klahn to do a disappearing act. Typically, he's back at it by now. Especially in regard to the controversy so-called `black lives matter' stirred up.

Given his sudden disappearance from cyberspace, and no obituary
having been published, along with his web page having been taken
offline, leads me to believe that either his computer died and he
decided not to return to cyberlife, or that he gave his computer
to the needy and decided not to return to cyberlife.

I lost a computer thanks to Katrina. I lost another computer
thanks to Rita. Living in an area prone to hurricanes, I takes
my chances. Sometimes my computer lives, sometimes it dies.

OTOH, what most probably happened was Bob Klahn upgraded to
Windows 10. And then he got the `Something Else' screen ...

    Hello Tim,

    [..]

    Roy was an idiot.

    Witt wasn't well-liked by many.

That depends on whether you were on the sending or receiving end.
You have to remember that Roy was a product of the flame echoes.
I didn't really mind him, as I understood where he was coming from.
But some folks did not understand (and never wanted to understand).

I strongly suspect that a large part of that was his setup was such that none of the `usual suspects' in the North American Backbone could shut him down.

He did have brains enough not to trust others to feed him the
messages he wanted. If other sysops thought along the same lines
as him there would be no NAB (or any other demented power structure
    within fidonet) to speak of.

This absence is not normal for him. Especially when seeing `my'

All the same, someone should check on his wellbeing.

A few years ago I posted a message to all in this echo about
Sue Alexander, citing her obituary. She was a published author,
and nationally known. Yet a certain "castrati" crowd, led by
an amateur shit stirring troll, continues to claim that I made
it all up. Despite the fact that I had clearly cited my source.

There are other examples that come to mind. The point is,
those who have no argument are left with nothing but personal
attacks. And that impresses no one. Kind of like jerking off.
I mean, really. Do you beat your meat? Be honest ...

And if he did, who can blame him? On the other hand, there
are plenty of folks who can blame him. But not until they blame
Obama first. After all, everything is Obama's fault. Can't have
it any other way. Just can't. :)

I liked his independence from the `usual suspects' of the NAB. He offered
to let me into Fidonet off his system once not long before he died. I
almost took him up on it, but didn't like the idea of being beholden to

over his system to keep myself involved.

Excuses, excuses. Fact of the matter is computers die.
Usually sooner rather than later. At this point in time,

More and more folks are choosing to downsize. Some by moving
into an apartment or other rental. Others by finding a rural
setting and building a small abode, 600 to 1200 square feet.
And then there are preppers, who seem to prefer 300 to 400
feet as their main size, although some do get close to about
500 square feet. It is the loners and very devout couples
who really take small seriously, living in buildings that
are barely over 100 square feet. Not really sure those
structures could withstand anything approaching a hurricane,
tropical storm, or even a gale ...

    Hello Bob,

computers are so cheap that I get a new one every three
or four years, if not sooner. And rarely bother to fix
    one if it breaks.

    You have no family responsibilities.

    Ayn Rand on steroids???

And then there are preppers, who seem to prefer 300 to 400
feet as their main size, although some do get close to about
    500 square feet.

Pulling numbers out or your ass, or can you provide citations?

I'm amused by the notion of what a prepper's response to a poll asking about their location would be.

Too soon to upgrade to 10. Much too buggy right now.
Better to wait. But do what you want.

I have three desktops, and four laptops functional. All but two
    with XP.

Hmph. I have at least seven desktops/towers set up and
running, I don't pollute them with Micro$oft products.

There are a total of about 100 computers here, including an
    IBM S/390, an IBM AS/400 and two NCR Tower 16/32s - I don't
know how many PC compatibles there are here and I'm too
lazy to go count them. Plus a room full of parts...

I am now living in an apartment. No longer have that kind of
    room.

I live on a 2 acre 'farmlet' with an 1800 sq ft house and two outbuildings.
My nearest neighbor is 1/4 mile up the road.

I live in the far eastern county about a mile from Interstate 8.

Seven miles west to the nearest gas station, and about 5 miles east to the nearest town. I sit outside drinking coffee in the mornings during summer months, and coyotes come to within 40 yards of where I'm sitting. Although
by the time I set the coffee down and pick up the 22 rifle, they've ducked
down the bank into the wash and are gone.

In the evening I sit outside puffing on a cigar, sipping a beer, and jack rabbits come across the lot to within about 15 or 20 feet of me foraging
in the weeds and grass for roots and stuff.

Its nice not to have a lot of traffic noise, gangs...having to get off the street before dark...worry about the car parked at the curb...

That much land in southern California must be worth a couple of trainloads
    of money.

Having lived in rural America upwards of ten years there's not enough money
in the Treasury to move me back into a city. Or town. Or municipality.

Quiet and clean air are worth it.
