How do you guys feel about AI?

I pretty much hate it. I'm not scared of it, but maybe i should be, but so far i think it's total shit and i think some AI developers are being shady about scraping sites and videos for information. I've seen a few videos were people would not admit to what data their AI model uses.

for me, i find it annoying. the output is really wordy but has very little content for the most part. Furthermore, so far most of it is not
    very accurate.

    it's craaaap

I mean - I don't like that we're here, but we are. I find them helpful for some things today... I've been poking around local models more than ChatGPT 3.5/4.0... ollama, PrivateGPT w/ GPU - and the models that have been released to the public are pretty decent.

The truth is - they're going to scrape ALL the data. Sure; it'll be in the media that they used YouTube for video creation, reddit for userspace information - but the real gotcha is that they're going to use our last 20 years of posting publicly; we 100% were the product.

I pretty much agree. Current consumer-grade AI is utter bullshit.

It is compounding a problem we already had: crappy websites with zero useful content that plague search engine results. It used to be bad. Now, machine generated sites are making the most common subjects unbrowsable because anything useful will be buried undr a sea of AI crap.

I have found some fringe search engines to be useful to mitigate this. For example, Marginalia has a mode in which sites with advertisements are excluded from results, and since most of the AI crap is done for profit, it removes so much of it. Wiby is also ok in this regard. The bad news is these search engines have small indexes.

Honestly, I was hopeful that AI could help us weed out the rubbish from the web. But instead, it's like they've thrown more gasoline onto the fire. And now we're stuck with even fewer options, forced to rely on obscure search engines just to find something halfway decent. It's a vicious cycle of mediocrity and frustration.

I wish there was some way to put an end to this AI apocalypse or at least create a filter to sift through all the trash. But for now, we're stuck playing a constant game of cat and mouse with the endless flood of useless information, hoping for a glimpse of something worthwhile. Sounds as bad as reaching real people at AT&T. I once had a
business-class internet service paid for through a wholly-owned
subsidiary, and they continually bounced calls back and forth between
AT&T and the billing party. Then AT&T would say it's the billing
party's problem and I should be working through them, since they're the
    "customer".

I asked the billing party what value they provided to the customer, and
after a long pause, was asked if there was anything else I could help
with, then was thanked for being their customer. :|

I will say that the Google Virtual Assistant that's part of the Pixel phones is freaking amazing. I get between 1 and 10 spam/scam calls to my phone each day, and It's been months since one has actually caused my phone to ring.

They get stuck listening to a "Virtual Assistant" ask what they're calling about. If they try to leave a message, the assistant lets them ramble, then usually says "I'm sorry the person you're calling can't take your call right now"

I wonder how hard it would be to come up with an AI voice system that just wastes a scammer's time...

I was wondering how that works. for my phone i have to choose the screening each time they call.

Last week someone from hr called me and i called them back and the virtual assistant told me to get lost. I believe the reason i gave was i have to talk to hr because i am returning their phone call.

I wonder how hard it would be to come up with an AI voice system that just wastes a scammer's time...

Those guys don't really waste too much time. Seriously i really wish i did answer some of these calls. There was a guy with a thick indian accent that said he was from the fbi and he was yelling at me. He demanded I pay them money. My cell's number used to belong to a guy who would get scammed all the time. That's why i use google voice for my main number and voicemail.

It used to be that as soon as you mentioned cancelling your account,
you'd be transferred to an account retention specialist, a smooth
talking US-based agent who'd "miraculously" find you a special rate.
You'd do that every year when your current promotion ended.

The last time my promotion ended, I said I'd need to cancel if I
couldn't get my bill down to XXX and they said "sorry to see you go".

I told them I needed to speak to someone who knew their account
offerings, got put on hold and someone came back 20 minutes later with a
    decent promotion.

I think it's time to move to AT&T Fiber, if anything for symmetric
    service (I'm 600/10 here).

it would seem they're allowed to get away with it from a practical standpoint .. running two sets of coax cabling everywhere would be crazy, DSL piggybacks on the phone system but it's still entirely local and single-provider (even if in your area multiple companies are allowed to re-sell it).. afaik fiber is pretty much end-to-end to.. can't really just say "hey, run the fiber from my house over to a different isp" .. fiber sits in an price bracket where it's
almost too expensive to offer so you're probably lucky if you have one in the first place..

I've heard nightmares from people who tried to resell DSL on copper
from the local exchange carrier. Since the local exchange carriers
were required to open their copper network by law but there wasn't much
oversight, they did everything in their power to cripple resellers
ability to sell DSL, while using the cost overhead to make their
services cost-competitive. I think everyone's given up by now.

I had resold DSL service for a couple of years through a savvy local
ISP. It was nice getting DSL service and having my ISP be the customer
of record. He knew which buttons to push, so to speak to get problems
