    From Newsgroup: alt.bbs.synchronet

    Hello,
I recently setup a few Usenet groups but I have not had much traffic. Are there any Usenet groups that are active. Please forgive me if this is not supposed to be posted here. :)

there are no active msg newsgroups anymore. only some that
    trade binary files.

Not true. There are quite a few active Linux-related newsgroups, and
    others.

the one i read, alt.os.linux.slackware, has a few good threads a month. about on par with some of the bbs echos around here.. and with similar people (they use it cause they like usenet..)

oh good we can have a competition to see which old hobby dies off first.
i'm surprised there's any people actually using usenet like that.
i guess the bots stopped raping it with spam.

Many people still use some of the usenet groups via google groups gateway. Google is trying to filter out spam.. but at the same time they are a major contributor to have it spawned as well.

I occasionally check USENET to see some groups are indeed relatively active.. but I'd say all FTNs together generate much more traffic than USENET today.

Still as a tech opportunity I find it interesting to see NNTP gateway under BBS credentials to access FTNs discussions via usenet client. I think Synchronet allows it, yet I don't see anybody truly enabling it.

I assume for security/spam protection reasons.

Most Synchronet BBSes offer NNTP access to their message bases (including vert.synchro.net) and have for 20+ years.

Have you tested many BBSes to see if they have NNTP runing? I thought most Synchronet BBSes had NNTP enabled.

yeah it all depends on if they have the port open.
you, me and other people have used nntp with robust forum softwares to put our msg bases on the web.
