#2 In and Out burger near me finally opened.

An In-N-Out opened about a 45 minute drive from me about 3 and a half years ago. It still draws a lot of people, and it almost always seems busy. A few years ago, I went and tried it, and I went inside and waited about 45 minutes for my food. It's still almost always busy every time I pass by it, so I haven't been back there since. I don't want to wait that long for my food. It definitely isn't as quick as the name seems to imply.

Plenty of Whataburgers here in the panhandle of Florida, but In-and-Out
is not in this area at all. I always thought those were a west coast
    thing.

How about 5-Guys burgers, are they out west? They are certainly in the conversation for the best burgers that I know of. We have them here,
but not as commonly seen as others.

Yes, I think they are mainly a west coast thing. I believe they started in California. As far as I know, there are only 2 in Oregon so far. I've been hearing they've been wanting to build an In-N-Out in my metro area for the past few years. I heard they had decided on a location, but the city denied them a permit to build there, and I haven't heard anything about it since then.

How about 5-Guys burgers, are they out west? They are certainly in the conversation for the best burgers that I know of. We have them here, but not as commonly seen as others.

Yes, we have 5 Guys here. I think they're pretty good. As with many fast food places though, their prices have increased to fairly crazy levels in the past couple years. Currently, their regular hamburger is about $9 and a cheeseburger is about $10.. Last time I went there, maybe 4 or 5 years ago, it was about half that, I think. I feel like fast food prices are a bit insane these days, and to save money, I try to only go to places that offer deals now (often through their smartphone app).

Never had a whataburger, hopefully we'll get one here.
Went to our new In and Out last night for the first time.

The McDonalds app offers deals in it, and lets you accumulate reward points that you can use to order an item for free, so you can save some money that way. Some other fast food places offer similar deals in their apps, if you choose to go there.

The McDonald's app is pretty useful. I use it occasionally thorughout the year, but every day for a solid week when I'm at EAA AirVenture each July (Our volunteer team meets at a local McDonalds each morning).

For a solid year they had a daily "30% off your entire order" deal in the app. It brought my breakfast each morning to under $10, and I'm a fat guy who eats a lot.

Yeah, the McDonalds app has some decent deals in it. I've been having a problem with it recently though, where I'm unable to use a deal unless I clear the cache, clear the app storage, and log in again. Seems like a bug in their app, and it hasn't been fixed yet.

The small, locally owned, non-fast-food-chain burger joints are usually 100x better than most of the common fast food places.

Since I'm not much for fast food these days (mainly McDonalds and Taco Bell, really), besides maybe Burger King and Culver's (which Culver's may be more of a Wisconsin thing, too - and way better than In and Out burger, IMO). I've taken a liking to some local custard shops that serve burgers. They're usually pretty amazing, and twice the size of a normal fast food burger. Oddly enough, Culver's is also known for their frozen custard.. but they've become quite the favorite fast food chain around here for a lot of people.

There's one place by me here in WI, called "Bubba's Frozen Custard" yet have a full menu of burgers and even /real/ Chicago dogs, and of course, cheese curds. :)

Locally owned, employees the high school kids, and supports the community.

I don't get the culvers thing. for me, at best they are ok. I've had problems where the food was wrong and the food was cold.

usually in the richer areas the culvers are better.

Anyways, a mcdonalds quarterpounder deluxe is better than any burger at culvers and you can get it for like 4 bucks on the mcdonalds app.

regardless, I can make a better burger at home than any of these places, and i know they get their meat from the same source (cargill).

sobelmans has great burgers. those are the guys with the fried chicken and hamburgers in their bloody marys. but their burgers get so big they end up being a mess with all the addons.

That's what I'm talkin' about! You probably still have a place or two

been going to Wendy's again. I think I prefer a Wendy's burger over McDonalds or Burger King (usually a Dave's Single or Dave's Double)
    - They seem really fresh to me, and are fairly tasty.

Wendy's isn't bad. I just don't have one close enough to me, and there's always other and better options if we're out and about and pass one. :)

Another fast food burger I like is A&W's Papa Burger.

I happened to stop at probably one of the only A&W's left in Wisconsin (it was down in Racine or Kenosha), not all that long ago. Whatever burger I had wasn't bad, for fast food. But really nothing I'd write home about, when comparing fast food burgers with burgers from just about anywhere else.

    Regards,
    Nick

I think McDonalds burgers are okay sometimes,

I'd take a Kwik Trip gas station burger over a burger from McDonalds, any day.

And there's a Kwik Trip on just about every corner, too :)

but I'd take a Burger King Whopper over a McDonalds burger.

Completely agree! You can also order your whopper with "heavy all" and get 50% more of every other ingredient on that whopper. You can thank me later. :)

I remember when they had the "Gilbert Burger". A triple whopper with double everything (without pickles).

I'd order it with pickles and without tomatoes. :)

But in the past few years, when I get a fast food burger, I've often been
going to Wendy's again. I think I prefer a Wendy's burger over McDonalds

Both of the ones here in Appleton shut down about a year ago because the franchisee went bankrupt. One is just down the road from me, but they could never keep enough people. Even if they were open, the lights outside were off, and it regularly took 10 minutes at the drive-thru even if it wasn't busy.

Apparently someone has snatched up the locations and there's a sign out front saying it'll be re-opening this fall. I do miss Frostys...

There's more A&Ws than you think in WI according to https://awrestaurants.com/locations-list/wi/
(47 cities, Some cities have more than one)

They have the best cheese curds from a fast-food, "chain restaurant" standpoint. (That's right, Culver's, I'm calling you out for those dry balls of bread you call "cheese curds").

They made a big push about 15 years ago or so to expand. 20-25 years ago there was only a handful like the one you were at.

Back when I was a kid my parents would occasionally stop at the one in Clintonville, WI on the way up to our cottage. Maybe once every couple years or so, and usually only when we were going up there with friends.

A while ago, I thought Wendy's might be disappearing, but there are several in my area. They just don't seem as common as other fast food places.

Yeah, I hadn't eaten at an A&W until maybe 10-15 years ago when they started building more locations - they now have a few in my area. I usually see them as combined KFC-A&W locations.

I've heard Burgr King might be in some trouble though. They closed one of the locations close to me (which seemed random), and I've heard they're closing others too. I think it kinda sucks because I like their burgers, but even the deals in their app aren't very good deals anymore.

    My coice of fast-food joints:

    1. Wendy's
    2. Culver's
    3. Burger King
    4. Roosters

They are building a Culver's near by. I have never been to one of them. Have not heard of Roosters either :-)

I think they still have a triple whopper, but it's not called a Gilbert Burger any more, and it may not even be displayed on their regular menu. I'd imagine not many people order it, since the double whopper is already pretty big. :)

Yeah, I've seen that at just about every fast food franchise lately. Even BW3's by me is always short staffed.

Ah, then the only one I've seen in southeastern Wisconsin, then.

They have the best cheese curds from a fast-food, "chain restaurant" standpoint. (That's right, Culver's, I'm calling you out for those dry balls of bread you call "cheese curds").

    Hmm, good to know!

It was definitely a nice change from the normal shit they stuff two of in every town.

I wouldn't doubt it, when you went from 2 whoppers for 5 dollars within the last 5 years or so, to over $10 for a regular whopper combo these days. Less and less people are going to come around.
