• TWGS question

From Richard Vonzel@1:282/1038 to All on Sat May 13 11:28:08 2023
Everyday the games in my TradeWars Game Server seem to disappear. I have to create the games over all the time. Is there a reason that they don't stay created?

I (and I think many others) have the same problem. The registry key disappears (often) when rebooting. I saved the registry key (using regedit.exe likely) and just restore that when needed. It's a pain in the ass and a pretty huge bug in this commercial software.

I just sent email to John describing the issue. I assume he already knew of the problem since many TWGS players seem to be aware of it. I also found it mentioned on the linked support forum as well (back 2016):

The last release was over 10 years ago, so not holding out much hope for a fix any time soon. :-(

well at that point i would just run the dos version locally and then do a telegate out to some popular servers.

i'm not a fan of the game personally and when i had some big players on datastream and on my bbs they'd be playing the game with scripts and essentially botting the whole thing.

This is the response I received from John:

Yes, I have seen this issue. It has to do with changes in Windows to
deal with security. But I run TWGS on Windows 10 without this issue.
The main fix seems to be to make sure that TWGS has full administrative
rights. This is the key to whether or not it can write permanent
    registry entries.

For a future fix, I am planning a new TWGS version that will remove all dependence on the registry. I will instead implement it so that it
doesn't require an install, you can just save it into a directory and
run it and it will be fully self-contained. That will hopefully
future-proof it against these kinds of Windows changes moving forward.
I'm not sure when I'll be able to put out a new version, however, as I'm
    very busy with other projects.

so is there any real benefit to using twgs instead of the old bbs doorgame

For me, it seems to correspond with reboots (or maybe Windows updates, which requires a reboot).

    which
    requires a reboot).

it's probably windows updates. i've had that happen with other things in the past. i just did an update yesterday and it cleared my mirc settings in the registry even though the .ini was fine. i'm running an old copy of mirc for my shoutcast bot.

i also have custom commands for files i made an imported into the registry. those are gone. happened in the past with some big updates, too.
