What about using a portable AC? LG makes one that I believe is 8,000 BTU and only draws 6 amps. I picked up a simular model on sale at Walmart.
You can cut the bracket or form one out of a 2x4 and it should fit
fine...
That is exactly what I have running in my office to suppliment the central A/C in the house. I picked this unit up at Lowes a few years ago for around $200.
Most of the homes in my neighborhood have two central A/C units (two zones), but ours has one. It is a 5 ton evaporator coil - but when it hit 97 degrees here a few days ago it was tough to keep the upstairs cool without my extra unit running, too.
Not to mention the "energy days" our local power company has been having where they cycle off your compressor for half the day. On those days, I turn the temp down to 66 degrees in the morning and tell everyone to wear a coat just to
get a head start on cooling before they shut it off.
