Hi All...


Has anyone here set up a tablet for a senior relative/friend successfully?

My application would be primarily to give the user the ability to participate in accessing pics over Facebook from family members. Combined with a case where the person can keep the unit propped up at a table next to them, I'm thinking that would work.

The Kindle Fire HD 10" seems like a good fit. Anyone here have experience with it?

The Fire tablets come with Amazon's own "skin" of the OS which is very different from Android. The experience for people seems hit or miss whether they like it or not. If you can get a version that can allows you to disable the default launcher and use your own, you can get it to at least look/act a little more like regular Android. Otherwise, I think the tablet's bezels
would be a benefit for someone that isn't able to hold things easily.

Thanks for your input. The person's hands are experiencing the
twisted fingers that arthritis brings with it. She might not
need to "hold" the device that often, especially if it's
propped up at a table next to her, but she might need to adjust
it or manipulate it to power on/off. Which reminds me to ask..
Does the Fire tablet have an instant on? ..or does it require
some kind of hard push of a button on the side? ..or a screen
gesture/swipe action?

You do have to turn the screen on with a button on the top. It does not
support doubletap to wake or anything like that. There is an app in F-Droid that can wake the screen with a gesture over the camera, I believe.

Thx. The button would be on one of the narrow ends that you
describe as the top? ..or do you mean there is an accessible
button on the broadest side when the tablet is resting in
landscape mode? I like the gesture trick, but that would imply
that the camera is always "on"?

"proximity sensor" sounds different than "camera".

So.. this WaveUp wouldn't necessarily work on the FireHD?
