• Modem Support

From Flavio Bessa@4:801/189.1 to All on Mon Apr 10 16:23:28 2017
    Hello everybody.

A few die-hard users have come to me asking to access my system via a modem.

As Mystic has abandoned modem support a while ago, I am willing to pick
up an old laptop with a modem that I have here, install Linux on it and make it
available to them. I was wondering if there is any BBS software with active support that still has modem code onto it.

    Regards,

    Flavio

Why not install native DOS and WildCat! v4? WC4 is abandonware now :)

Why? Use Rob Swindell's SEXPOTS program and run that on the same BBS
box that your BBS is running on. It basically answers your modem then
    telnets to your BBS.

I'll second that. I know you could probably kludge something up under *NIX
to do so but for Windows, SEXPOTS is the only way to go AFAIK.

To date, I think only sexpots has that ability.

I think you can also use either Argus, Taurus, or Radius as a frontend, with the "dial-up-to-telnet" utility. Argus will answer the phone line, and then
    hen
the caller presses <Esc> twice to load the BBS, dial-up-to-telnet takes over, and telnets them right in.

I used Argus with my setup several years ago when I had dial-up. Unfortunately,
after construction crews working out here at the apartment complex sliced the cables like a knife through butter (even though they were clearly marked), then left the holes open, then heavy rain flooded the cables overnight...it was worthless to try to get a voice call...never mind a fax or data call.

I have a US Robotics 56k fax modem with the Classic Phone Tools software under windows 7, but the line is VoIP, through "MagicJack Plus" (I have the original "MagicJack" for voice mail. Each line costs just under $40 a year, compared to well over $50 a month for a generic analog phone line...but, from what I understand, those are being converted to digital or VoIP. If there was
a way I could have the modem take dial-up calls, I'd put Argus in on the frontend, as I used to do. It would require some reconfiguration over here,
but I don't know if a VoIP line for modem callers would work. There are still some folks on dial-up internet, especially in rural areas of Arkansas.

As far as I know, SEXPOTS _SHOULD_ be able to be ported to *NIX since I
believe it is based on some of the same source that Synchronet is based on.

WildCat! was not that popular here in Brazil, I'll stick with Linux as of
now... Have just installed MBSE, will be fun to configure mgetty and put MBSE online.
