Have you tried talking to your local aquarium shop? Mine took an
enormous pl*co off me when it outgrew the tank. Chances are they won't
want the tank, but might be interested in rehoming your fish for you -
some of them maintain big tanks for companies and they tend to like
    larger specimens.

I doubt they would give you much/anything for them - I guess you need to
weigh up your need to be rid of them vs how much money you want. You
may have to accept the fact that to rehouse the fish you'll not get
    anything for them at all.

What area are you in? Here (London, UK) I would advertise in the
free ads paper (but only expect a few quid for it or even free if
buyer collects). Failing that I'd take it to the local charity shop
for them to sell, or sell it on ebay, or simply take it to the dump.
A shame, but there you go - if you no longer want it, that's the
    choice!

I would also offer to donate the fish to friends or try to sell
them, but if that's not possible I'd talk to my fish store and
see if they will take them (probably for free!)

I don't think you'll get any/much money for it unless you have
rare fish or a particularly lovely aquarium, but you should be
able to get rid of things for free and ensure the fish have new
    homes.

Failing that you could advertise in the local paper that you have
a working setup and you'd happily come and install it to a family
that want fish for their kids or something, and leave them a print
    out of basic care...?

See if any of the LFS in your area have a message board on which you
could post an ad for your setup.

The LFS may take the fish; if they handle more than just pets you
could get store credit for any other pets you (or your friends) may
    have.

Look for a local aquarium society. You don't mention where you are,
but use google and look for "aquarium" (U.S. Spelling) and "club" or
    "society" with your city.

i.e. a google search using "aquarium (club, society)" .. without a city,
    gives 120,000 hits ..

"loot" or a version of "bargain pages" or similar is a good idea.
(if you're in the midlands and it's a decent size tank, let me
    know :-) )
