    Well, the company's official "on paper" name is still Apogee Software, Ltd, so in that aspect you could say "Yes, they are". However, since 1995, the majority of them have been marketed under the 3D Realms label.

    If you ask me, the REAL groundbreaker was QUAKE! Easy a decade ahead of its time in graphics and action....not to mention animation quality.

    Doom was essentially Wolfenstein with SLIGHTLY better graphics and the same action....

    Quake broke new ground!!

    Well, Wolfenstein is an id Software game. id wrote it. Apogee assisted, and were the distributors in shareware, but in retail, id owns the rights to put it
    whomever they want. id's been with Activision for retail distribution for awhile now.

    If you want to be pedantic, yes, it was released for the Apple II in 1981 whereas the Atari version was released in 1982 (and CBM 64 in 1983, PC in 1984). ;-)

    BUT, the Apple II was very expensive and not a great success outside the US and
    the Atari version of the game is better known. ;-)
