Radio Australia Shortwave Broadcasts to End on January 31

Another prominent shortwave broadcaster is going dark, "The SWLing Post"
blog reports. Radio Australia has announced that it will cease its
shortwave transmissions on January 31. The station, popular with SWLs, broadcasts in the 31-, 25-, 19-, and 16-meter bands.

This is really sad news, since Radio Australia has been an excellent propagation beacon, for checking radio conditions to the Pacific area,
    on the 9-, 12-, 15- and 18-MHz bands.

Personally, I have been listening to Radio Australias SW transmissions, since the late 1940+ years, and enjoyed the sound of the Kooka Burra.
Or is it Cooka burra? The sound however is the same, hi.

Radio Australia programming will remain available via streaming,
    satellite, and other media.

Well, my SW broadcast receivers do not have those facilities,
and listening on those transmissions, doesn't indicate propagation.

That is sad news. I have not had a SW-capable radio in a while but, back in the early 1980's, I used to listen to one quite often. Listening to it was much like my early experiences with BBSing just a few short years later... I was amazed that I could listen to broadcasts from around the world. As this was still the cold war, I almost felt like a young spy eavesdropping on the broadcasts of Radio Moscow World Service. :) Then, of course, there was the BBC, the VOA, the time beacons, WRNO (that played rock-and-roll out of New Orleans), and a bunch of broadcasts in languages that I could not understand but, based on the tone of voice, I imagined were some dictator or
revolutionary attempting to incite their people to action! :)

I wonder what the additional cost is of providing a short wave simulcast?

    listen to SW-broadcasts today.

I've got three NordMende "luggable" radios with bandspread SW-bands, for BC-bands in the type 'Globetrotter' and Ham-bands in 'Globetraveler Pro'

The second of the 'Globetraveler Pro' was inherited from a local ham.

I am quit new to the hobby ... but I bought a cheap Tecsun PL-600 radio.
Works OK ... not as good as devices costing multiples of it, but well enough for me very seldom use of it.

Apparently, powerline Ethenet adapters wreak havoc with shortwave
reception. Sadly, when I tried listening with one of my little
portable SW receivers all I heard was RF noise.

My reason to stay with the NordMende's are, except the SW/Ham-bands,
the large oval speaker, that gives a very natural sound.

It was a family radio and my recollection of it is that it eventually died.
I thought about getting one of my own but always wind up spending the $$$ on something else.
