From Daryl Stout@1:19/33 to Al Kaiser on Sat Mar 19 12:27:00 2016

    Al,

If you are using CHRIP I'd advise you to *#:STOP*#: before it's too
late. You may get away with it a few times but eventually it WILL
    catch up to you.

Good thing I didn't use that to program the Baofeng UV-5R that I won at the Shreveport Hamfest last year. Right now, all I use it for is to monitor the local Skywarn Nets.

    Daryl, WX1DER

    UV-5R programming is save.
    Daryl had problems with Yaesu.

I programmed my UV-5r, BF-F8+ and UV-B5 many times with Chirp.
    Works perfectly!

OK, I'll have to get a repeater database listing, and program it with that. The thing is, the UV-5R doesn't put out much power (it wasn't designed to) Besides, what did I expect for under $50??...in reality, I was about to purchase that HT from a hamfest vendor, when they called me up to the front, as
the winner of that door prize.

    It should give you 4W.

    Actually I don't have a UV-5R but a UV-5RTP wih 8W.
But the difference to the normal 4W one is not really noticable.

Besides, what did I expect for under $50??...

They were down to 22 USD on amazon.
Now they cost slightly under 30 USD.

Unfortunately, being in antenna prohibited housing, and with a lot of trees around outside, it's almost impossible to hit a nearby repeater...even though it's "wide area coverage".

I'm reminded of the phrase "you get what you pay for". I've heard that with several of these models, if you drop it, you might as well get a new one, and throw the damaged one in the trash.
