I'm slowly getting back into CW after (15?) year break. What is the consensus on using program to decode and encode CW? I know it is better to use a real interface to key the rig than MCW (through signalink only). But is it "bad" to rely on programs until I can copy consistently at 15wpm? I know what the purist will say already but in practical terms what is the best way to go forward and still have fun?

    Hi Tim,

I have not learnt CW but was using a decode programme some years ago. I'll
try and find it again and let you know the name of it. It was very good but
you did need to register it.

    Best, Paul

I have myself been off some time and I find it's easiest to come back by listening to qso's in the cw-portion of the bands.

You will not find many rag chews going on on 20 m or other DX-bands but
    try 40 and 80 m.

I don't see anything wrong using a computer program for a CW QSO.

Just remember not to send faster that the other operator can copy.

I haven't been on the air for years, but when I'm driving on multilane
highways I sound off (in my head) the letters on the license plates of
    autos that pass me.

I found a link to listen to W1AW's Code Practice some months ago and
learned that I couldn't copy as fast as I use to.

because I was visiting at a home many years ago where the fellow
"Trained" that software and then used it to make a Email to send to

Voice Type for OS/2 was included with v. Warp 4 and I installed it.

It worked very well but after a while I began to feel silly sitting
there talking to the computer and the wife in the living room asking if
I said something to her so I haven't used it for many years but it's

    Howdy! Tom,
    -snip-
Back in the late 80's whan I was working i nhe engineering
department of the local VA facility the Anesteshology Research
group were trying to adapt speech recognition for logging
madication administration. It never worked out,
the probem is that ones speech had to be totaly consistant. Get
a cold and you had to re-train the program. Have a tremor in
    the voice, Forget it.
Sure it works for simple game playing commanda but for real
transcription of dictation it is a different story.

One year I went to a "Engineers Day" exibit.

In one of the classrooms they had a mike connected to a computer that
was running a program that displayed on a monitor what someone said
    into the mike.

It passed my test when I said the alphabet backwards in the mike.

That happened long before my friend tried training the Dragon software
    on his Windows 9x pc.
    .
I have no idea what computer the Engineering School was using, most
likely it was running a share on a main frame at the school.

I said this because in another room there was a teletype terminal set
up to show how students used a computer at that school.

I'm sure that the pc my friend used in the 1990's probably would look
like a tinker toy compared to the main frame at the school many years
    earlier.
