Why not go to the BIOS and enable write protection ?
Are we alone in this world ?
Thanks for the hint. Actually, it never came into my mind that THAT
would work against autorun. In my mind I have played with the thought
that I may find a panel with settings, and to disable the autorun
setting.
I'm still fighting Thunderbird. I want it to get the new messages immeadetely to my HD, to be read/edited (bulletins), offline.
As it now seems to function, it seems to wait for me to save those messages while still online.

trying to use thunderbird for reading newsgroups in offline mode is
going to be a real PITA...
there are a couple of ways to tell t-bird to get the messages in the groups... one is to use the online/offline button in the bottom left
corner of the t-bird window... when you click it to go offline, it
will then download all the messages...
it is just so much easier to subscribe to the groups and read the
messages as they are pulled down without having to play with the online/offline mess... especially if you have an "always on"
connection (eg: cable or dsl) anyway...

Thae you gone into "TOOLS" - "ACCOUNT SETTINGS" and in the middle of
that page put a check mark next to the "Automaticly Download New
Messages" line ???

BTW, I really miss ZoneAlarm that works so nicely in my XPp laptops,
but isn't available for Win10 anymore. Do you know of a replacement?
But I hate that big AVG splash screen that comes up all too often.

I went there, but didn't find that setting anywhere in the "Tools" menu. HG>The version I have is 38.6.0 and may be newer than the one you have.

I went into Tools and chose Account settings, but didn't find that "Automatically Download New messages" anywhere.
There is however another way that Mark Lewis taught me. Down in the
left corner there is an icon telling you about connecting to my host,
mail server and other things.
Clicking on that icon gives me a choice of downloading new messages
before going off-line, even if I have already clicked on "Get
messages".
You see, with this Mobile Internet, I'm not constantly on-line.

when you go into the account settings, there's like 7 or 8 different
pages of settings... you access each one from the menu on the
left... the setting you are looking for is in the server settings
section of your account settings... it is a checkbox...

i'm guessing that's working for you?

mobile internet?? i thought that was for cell phones and that one
would have DSL or cable for their fixed facilities...

Sorry left out a step. On the account setting list click on Server
Setting and it is on that page.

TNX Tom, I'll give it a new try next time I open that "Pandoras Box" hi.
I did it yesterday:
I went into Tools and chose Account settings, but didn't find that "Automatically Download New messages" anywhere.
From the settings menu at the right edge I chose (among others),
Account Settings - Server Settings and checked the boxes for
"[] Check for new messages at Startup" and
"[] Check for new messages every [] min"
They were both ticked, so I just set a new value for the minutes.
That ought to be what you ment by "Automatically etc.....".
