    Hi Jean,

Thanks for the hint. Actually, it never came into my mind that THAT
would work against autorun. In my mind I have played with the thought
that I may find a panel with settings, and to disable the autorun
    setting.

OTOH, that machine is mostly used to transfer files (bulletins), from
USB sticks to diskettes, because it has the plug-in diskette drive.

I'm still fighting Thunderbird. I want it to get the new messages
immeadetely to my HD, to be read/edited (bulletins), offline.

As it now seems to function, it seems to wait for me to save those
    messages while still online.

I have sent e-mails to @blueprintsoftware.com, that are the authors of
the PMMailWin mail program, and tried to connect to their site, without success.

I certainly would want somebody reading this, to alert me how to connect
to that company, or at least give me a hint of where I could get a more up-to-date version.

The PMMailWin2000 I have installed needs NTVDM as per a note at the installation process, but refuses to connect to my mail server, at least
    when running under Win10.

I have a "Dummy file for NTVDM" in the autoexec.bat - but that's all I
    know about NTVDM.

OTOH, I don't know how use this NTVDM when starting the program, and
neither did the guy at the ISP, so he took the easy way out to install Thunderbird. I didn't tell him to install it on E:\ , so it now resides
    on C:\mozilla\thunderbird.

Are we alone in this world ?

I think that's up to ourselves. The message activity is certainly low.
I seem to be occupied for at least five years after my death ;o).

at least each group has to be set to offline mode... you do that by clicking on
the group's name after you have subscribed to it... in the properties, you select the group to be read offline... then there are a couple of ways to tell t-bird to get the messages in the groups... one is to use the online/offline button in the bottom left corner of the t-bird window... when you click it to go offline, it will then download all the messages... there's another way in the menu but i don't remember it...

it is just so much easier to subscribe to the groups and read the messages as they are pulled down without having to play with the online/offline mess... especially if you have an "always on" connection (eg: cable or dsl) anyway...

Actually, I don't want to disable autorun, on the contrary, I want to
disable the AVG's control of it. IOW, I want to decide when/if I want
    the autorun to work.

I know how I can disable the control of autorun in Windows, but not how
    to do it in AVG.

As it now seems to function, it seems to wait for me to save those messages while still online.

    Thunderbird, that is.

trying to use thunderbird for reading newsgroups in offline mode is
going to be a real PITA...

I do not want to read newsgroups offline, I want to get the swedish and
finnish bulletins to the INBOX immeadetely when I ask "Get mail", not to
have to save them first from the list that presents them.

there are a couple of ways to tell t-bird to get the messages in the groups... one is to use the online/offline button in the bottom left
corner of the t-bird window... when you click it to go offline, it
will then download all the messages...

Hmm, I don't want to click anything extra to get the bulletins (msgs) to
my HD for reading/editing/replying. That is the way the PMMail program
for OS/2 worked as long as I was able to use the POTS connection with my
    ISP.

That is the way I want to have it, but the PMMailWin program wasn't able
to connect to my ISP via my laptops "Mobile Internet". Neither was the
guru at my ISP able to get it working, so he installed Thunderbird.

it is just so much easier to subscribe to the groups and read the
messages as they are pulled down without having to play with the online/offline mess... especially if you have an "always on"
connection (eg: cable or dsl) anyway...

Of course I have subscribed to the bulletins, they wouldn't come here
to my account otherwise, but I have not used T-Bird to subscribe to them

I have saved your message for later reading, to see if I have something
    to learn from it.

I went there, but didn't find that setting anywhere in the "Tools" menu.
The version I have is 38.6.0 and may be newer than the one you have.

However, it seemed to work OK today.

I rember Jean complaining that he couldn't see the senders name, I think
it was, but in the version I have, I see that and most of what I need.

Also I did learn from the author of the swedish ham bulletin, that the
program sending out the bulletin doesn't differentiate between the
recipients of the .pdf and text versions, but both go out to all.

It's up to me to see the difference between them. That was a bit odd at
first, since both bulletins show a text that looks to be a sign-off, but
in the bulletin I received today, he had added "text version" to the
"sign-off" text, so now I can see the difference at once.

Of course there is also a "paper-clip" icon for any message that contains
    an attached file.

BTW, I really miss ZoneAlarm that works so nicely in my XPp laptops,
but isn't available for Win10 anymore. Do you know of a replacement?

Maybe AVG does have the same functions that ZoneAlarm does, but so far
I haven't seen it showing a message, that informs me that an internal
program, Adobe, Avira or ZA, wants to connect to a site for upgrading,
as ZoneAlarm does. I don't mind the small message from Avira that my
version is in need of an upgrade, I know it.

But I hate that big AVG splash screen that comes up all too often.

AFAIK, you are very good at searching for things on the net.

Can you possibly find out what has happened "blueprintsoftwareworks.com"
that are/were the authors of the mail programs PMMail and PMMailWin.

I haven't succeded in contacting them by mail nor their www address.

I forgot to add that Mobile Internet can also be run from a stationary
machine if you plug in a receiver for the frequencies used by the cell
    phone companies.

These adapters (receivers) plug into an USB port, and come in two kinds.
One is an USB stick, and the other is kind-of-a router, with mostly a
couple of antennas. They do also plug into an USB port, but with a cable connector.

Laptops usually have built-in antenna(s), for the purpose.

I'm right now waiting for a 300 kbs thumb stick that is Win10
compatible. The presently available 150 kbs sticks already have Win10 compatible drivers, as do the 300 kbs "router" types.

"[] Check for new messages every [] min"

They were both ticked, so I just set a new value for the minutes.

That ought to be what you ment by "Automatically etc.....".

And both our Thunderbirds are supposed to be the same version!
I'll check again if I can find that setting. but it seems to work now,
when I click on the small icon in the lower left corner.

I get the note, if I want to Dld messages before going offline..
