From Jean Parrot@1:123/789 to Holger Granholm on Mon Jan 4 10:46:29 2016

    Hello Holger.

found Explorer there. So far I haven't found it in Win 10.

Neither have I found the "Run" command in the startup.

It is all there in W-10, one has to find it. Open the C:\ drive and find
Windows.old, click it open and look for IE.exe, run it and voilà. Maybe your GS
has deleted it ??? One is expected to use Edge, the latest IE. Find it in the Start menu and when running, use the URL line to get IE. IE 11 is the latest. On my machines here, when first running Edge, there was this option to go to IE.

The run command also is there, do the hotkey Windows and R, it will open a
dialogue where you can type anything to suit your little heart. But run is not one of them. What do you wish to RUN ?

Ask Alan if we should not rename this echo to W-10 ?

On any folder, clicking the right ear on your mouse will offer a lot of
options. I would not go back to any other version but 10, this said, I am not a
purist, CLI are fine but let them remain in history.

I never use any Start menu at all. All the apps that I use are on the taskbar
and easy to start. There are 28 icons on it so far.

OK, Tom, I will not mention it any more. You know, you are not that much ahead

I haven't been able to open the C:\ or any partition without a file
    manager.

click it open and look for IE.exe, run it and voilà. Maybe your GS

Yes, I think it has been deleted, but when I get my file manager,
ZTreeWin installed, it will be much easier for me to maneuver around to
find out what actually is there.

I haven't used Explorer even in the XPp, but just recently had a look at
it. I didn't find it very useful, as compared to the ZTW (ZTreeWin).

Find it in the Start menu and when running, use the URL line to get
IE. IE 11 is the latest. On my machines here, when first running
Edge, there was this option to go to IE.

I have found Edge in the task bar, but I have much to learn about it.

The run command also is there, do the hotkey Windows and R, it will open a dialogue where you can type anything to suit your little
heart. But run is not one of them. What do you wish to RUN ?

Yes, I got that hint in the SysOp echo, along with other suggestions.

Ask Alan if we should not rename this echo to W-10 ?

The name doesn't matter as long as the users know it, but I think it's difficult to propagate a new echo this day.

On any folder, clicking the right ear on your mouse will offer a
lot of options. I would not go back to any other version but 10,

Thanks for all the advice, I'll save this as a file as well as try to
keep it in my head, <BG>.

If you hold down F8 and select "advanced options", there's a feature
to do a fresh install, move your Windows folder, and remove any
programs that weren't part of the original install. All data stays
    intact.

It provides a list of the programs removed.

After upgrading from Windows 7 to 10, I had all sorts of problems --
Explorer wouldn't always start, permissions issues on files in my
    profile, and random hangs.

All went away when I did the refresh, or whatever they called it.

Nice! Thank you. Despite your misgivings on the distribution, I appreciate your recommendation of it. I have read of other reviews of the OS, but I can't
recall when or where I saw them. :)

I'm kinda pre-disposed to using a recent Puppy Linux, 6.0.2-something. I already have a copy and have run it once or twice on two of my machines, just from a USB boot. It has 'promise', particularly as it supposedly can use Ubuntu packages.

OTOH, I have a hankering to run Xubuntu but that really depends on what they'll
do with the next LTS version due in April. I've been running their 14.04 LTS on & off in a VirtualBox and found it to be "useable". :) I intend to hang on
to Windows 8 till the X'u '.1' update that might sprout in June, or maybe October.

I'm happy to give Mint a whirl in a VirtualBox, based on your say-so. I'm not averse to command line voodoo mumbo-jumbo but your insider knowledge has already given me an 'edge'. :) Thank you.

    Cheers,
    Paul.

Yes. Hence the GMTA. Very early on around 1987, I started using Norton Commander for DOS and that lasted about 5 years; I still have a copy of a European variant with a BBS terminal option. These days I use Tux Commander on all of my Linux systems: One Dell desktop; and about eight alternate USB boot & VirtualBox PC incarnations. It's the closest approximation to TC in Windows, though with a couple of rough edges. I

Ah, weather... well, we're technically into the second month of summer but it hasn't startd to really heat up yet. We're having 30-34°C days with variable 60-85% humidity but the Earth is still warming. It will get hotter through to April/May, as we get deeper into the cyclone season. Oh, and I've just this weekend installed my second UPS. So I'm ready for the storm season. :)

    Good evening Paul,

    Another file manager, I understand.

Yes. Hence the GMTA. Very early on around 1987, I started using
Norton Commander for DOS and that lasted about 5 years; I still have
a copy of a European variant with a BBS terminal option. At some
time, I did have a look at XTree but I didn't really like it since
it didn't follow the same multi-directory panel layout that I was
used to. Since the early 90s I've been using Total Commander for
Windows (TC for short). That's over 25 years! :)

Thanks for the list of various Windows File Managers. I have also in the beginning run Norton Commander, Central Points which began as PCTools,
and maybe some others, but I'm glad that I stayed with Xtree and now its descendants ZTree for OS/2 and Windows.

Ah, weather... well, we're technically into the second month of
summer but it hasn't startd to really heat up yet. We're having
30-34°C days with variable 60-85% humidity but the Earth is still
    warming.

I just read in todays newspaper that there have wild bush fires, IIRC
south of Perth, with temperatures about 39°C and strong winds.

A local inhabitant here is visiting her sisters over there, over the
    XMAS season.

    Have a nice evening,

Thank you kindly. Have fun! Be good. (I don't think they're
    mutually exclusive.)

    Cheers from here too,

    Holger

    Hello Robert,

I tend to use File Commander/W on my Windows systems and File
Commander/2 (both the same program, just two different platforms) on
my eComStation system. There is also a version of it available for
    Linux as well.

    Thanks for the hint.

I think I have FC/2 on a CD, but I'm not sure. It may be FM/2.

    Have a nice day,

Now you're jogging some old memories. I recall toying with PCTools as well, and a bunch of other utils, say, to low-level format HDDs and adjust sector-skipping rates, etc. :)

On second thoughts: it's h-e-a-v-y on photo file sizes, so, save it till you find a fast internet connection. I really must do one or two piccies of the current Win 8.1 before I blow it away, too. ;)

Yep, they're copping it tough over there. They share pretty much the same environment as us on the east coast, but it's much much drier. Hence a lot of bushfires.

Ooh, this reminds me. My youngest daughter works as a nurse in a remote hospital in Mount Isa (usually spelled Mt Isa). She was staying with me on the
weekend and happened to, just casually mind you, mention that she works with a girl from Aland! I'm sure she said Aland. (I'll double-double check.) I should ask for a name, as well.

    Cheers,
    Paul.

Oh yes they are still in fresh memory. I have used Norton Utilities very recently, namely the WIPEDISK program to wipe out a whole HD, before
putting in a new OS/2 installation.

Yes, I even received a Mobile Broadband subscription as XMAS gift, so
Santa was very kind to me. I'll use it as soon as I've got that Win10 configured to my liking, and got the needed programs installed.

Yesterday, I even got the ZTreeWin installed. Don't ask me how, it just
worked. I may have hit the right command prompt, and suddenly it worked.

Well, you've got your share of them too.

The lady I mentioned in the previous post, is a retired physiotherapist,
a very good one, named Sheila Sundblom.

Actually, there are many persons from Åland, that either have emigrated
to Australia, or are working there, or studying there.

Also, many a sailor have left their ship in Australia, and made a living
there, especially from the Eriksson sailing ships that brought wheat to
    Europe.

It's quite ecpensive to go there just for a holiday, but some do it.

    Have a nice evening,

Ah, yes. I've had days like that too. It means that the winds were favourable
and the phase of the moon was opportune.[grin]

I received a SMS note from my little girl: that lady was from Finland and has returned home now. :(

Good name! (Sheila) It's Australian slang for a lady/woman, though not much used these days by the young folk.

Maybe a couple of years ago, when the Aussie dollar was on par with the US greenback. Not now. The Aussie buck is roughly equal to 0.65 Euro. (Long-winded layman's ill-informed explanation deleted.)

    Cheers,
    Paul.

Many people here say they come from Finland, because Aland is pretty
unknown in the world, while Finland rings a bell with some.

    I don't recall that one ;o)

I haven't actually followed the exchange rate for the AU$. The most
important exchange rates are the swedish crown, because we usually
    travel there, and the US$.

'Alan' has no connection to the WINDOWS Fido echo other than a sometime reader/poster.

A long time ago, when Windows 98 was released, the question was raised about re-naming WIN95. It was pointed out by folks who were more involved with the FIDO network than I was (or am) that re-naming an echo area was problematic, as
it would be applied inconsistently by the various hosts and would cause problems and confusion routing the messages.

The result has been that WIN95 kept that name - though it seems wildly out of place 21 years later.

At one time, there was a WINDOWS2000 echo and a WIN32 echo among others....
