• Local Area Connection

From Ed Vance@1:2320/105 to All on Tue Oct 31 22:01:00 2017
    Howdy!,

When I turned this XP pc Yesterday I looked at the Local Area Connection
and instead of seeing the usual DNS Server numbers it had one entry of 192.168.1.1 instead of the usual two IP Address(s) that it shows me.

Today when I turned it on the Local Area Connection settings showed
the regular settings, except it could send Data out but not receive
    any Data.

I tried Restarting the pc without turning the Router or DSL Modem Off
and the Local Area Connection settings still showed the usual settings
but still it couldn't receive any Data.

So I Shut down the pc, turned the Router and DSL Modem Off, and then
    Powered Down the UPS.

I waited 15 minutes and turned every thing On and this time when I
checked the Local Area Connection settings they all looked good and
I could Send and Receive Data. Finally.

Anyone have an idea why this XP pc BURPED yesterday and today?

    Thanks!

Just as it is with the human gullet and the on-going battle bewteen good & bad bacteria, so it goes with our PC hardware. You most likely experienced an imbalance between different Chinese electrons. Now fixed through your accurate
    analysis and well-thought fix.

    Nice one, Ed!

    Cheers,

    Nice one, Ed!

No Credit due to Me, Paul.
It is a contant battle with the PC Compatiable computer(s) here.
The Commodore 64 PC's Floppy Drive took me a long time to learn how IT
wanted Me to talk with/to IT.

When I first got the C= system I tried over and over to format a FD using
the NEW Command, but didn't realize the Open Command on the first page of
the manual had to be used along with the other Commands to make the C= FDD
do what I asked it to do.

It is still a on going battle with the PC's I use.

You don't say. I went through that cycle just this morning. You see something
didn't work... a script file on my Linux machine (AKA, a batch file). I know it should have worked 'cause it had worked at a command prompt, a line at a time during testing.

I have been itching for the chance to use that script for two days, Ed. My chance came this morning, with the arrival of your note in fact. When it came time to use it to update my news server settings (and other things) from a remote site with that script, the last line of the configuration change failed.

It seems that I had stealthily hidden a copy/paste error from the testing command prompt! It had been sitting in a dark space in that script for two days, waiting for an opportunity to pounce! I was devastated.

I like to get my way. OTOH, I know where the kill switch is. :-D

    Cheers,
    Paul.

I think MY Fog came in with my previous message and caused those hidden
    Script Lines to wake up.

At times I've panicked and reach back where the A.C. Connector is plugged
in and Unplugged it, to get ITS attention.

Try that sometimes, it works for Me!

I did once, about two years ago. On my wife's old Linux PC I got spooked one morning, probably around 0900 (still before my first coffee), when I started up
Fire Fox. While FF was starting I noticed on a desktop application called Conky that an _outbound_ IP connect was being attempted to what looked like a hacker/smacker/hip-hop gee-whiz dangerous-sounding website!

Wham! I hit the big red power switch! (Not really big or red but you know what I mean.) I was in a full on panic. That was the first time the PC had been powered down in nearly four years.

When I sheepishly re-started the PC later, Linux was smiling at me. (I could tell it was having fun at my uneasiness.) No harm had been done. The website turned out to be linked to a FF add-on that I had installed a couple of nights previously. I just hadn't taken note of the support website on the first access. Oops. :)

    Cheers,
    Paul.
