    Hello All,

Ray Gwinn and I are in discussion about my taking over the care and feeding of SIO/VMODEM (a telnet engine/virtual modem/FOSSIL driver for OS/2 that Ray developed about 25 years ago). Nothing is set in stone yet but the discussion is going well.

Great news! Hopefully...we can see a way to register it or have it go open source the same way some of the old BBS software you can use with the consent of the author.

tbh if it's not open source it's not a win for the os/2 bbs community at all..

I'm just wondering... will you be able to fix any bugs or add to it, if need be, or is it locked in time and all we can do is get a registered copy??

The topic of further development/release of Sio comes up like Christmas every year. Sometimes the sources have disappeared or they're in the basement and Ray can't get there anymore.

Ok, it's up to Ray what he does with it. Only I find it ridiculous to keep waving the sausage.

I don't want to take away your hope now, but I'm skeptical that it will work this time.

First, I need to learn assembly language. <G>

I plan on fixing bugs in both versions though I will not likely touch
version 1.60d. I do want to try to fix SIO2K's habit of not working
on certain hardware combinations though. I may set up a dedicated
    testing team.

I do not plan on charging for a registration but may take donations
in kind if people find my work useful.

I understand this is a niche product these days but I'd like to keep
    it going.

Ray wasn't confident he could even teach someone how to compile it
without a long weekend with them in-person. Let alone improve upon it.

You don't just pick up assembly. Or driver programming. I still think it's better off with netlabs or the like. And if it's what I'm thinking.. they already have a license to this other code.. the IBM Device Driver Development Kit..

I really don't mean to offend heh

Hopefully you (or someone) would just be removing all the registration/copy-protection mechanisms altogether.
