• Sysop ACS not enough to read emails?

    From Björn Wiberg@2:201/137 to g00r00 on Wed Mar 23 19:05:03 2022
    Hello g00r00!

Is there any way for the SysOp to see and read all emails in the email
    message base (ID 1)?

I have set Sysop ACS to s255, but still can't see anything that is not addressed to/from myself.

Just wondering, as it might be needed in case of abuse etc.

    Thanks in advance!

    Best regards
    Björn

I've noticed this with netmails as well. I've had some automated netmails
sent to "Regional Coordinator" or "Network Coordinator" that I hadn't yet set to forward to me, so they just sat there unread, I could see from the
numbering of messages that something was there, but Mystic wouldn't let me
read them. I had to open one of the jam base files in a text editor to see what they were/who they were addressed to.

Yes, a parallel message reader might come in handy... Unless g00r00 has some tip or adds a "Sysop Pvt Override" setting or modifies the meaning of the Sysop ACS. =)

If you're using mutil as your mail tosser, you might wish to add those
"odd" aliases that you have discovered to forward = ... lines in the ImportEchoMail stanza of mutil.ini, though. But you never know when someone comes up with a new alias to netmail to... :-O

    Best regards

I am still not getting his messages via my FidoNet feed, not sure what is happening there but I have seen replies to a few posts all from him that I never saw.

But to answer the question I do not allow even the SysOp to read everyone else's private messages, and that is by design. Of course its possible to get around that in a few different ways.

As you noted if you have alternative names you should set them up to forward to your main account name.

I actually found a quick "hack" to be able to view everything in a private message base -- copy it (or create a new message base), specify the same Path and File Name, and set Private: No.

Of course one shouldn't forget to protect it adequately (e.g. set the ACSes to something like s255g1) and adjust the New Scan and QWK Scan to suitable values (I set them to No as I do not intend to read "new" messages there).

I also set Pvt Reply: Yes, even though I'm not intending to post messages through it (I would use the "real" message base for that).

    Best regards
    Björn
