Not when I boot up to another version that sits on a SSD that I do not use that
did not have me clearing out orphans (Mageia v5) and so the libiconv is still there - somewhere as I could not find it using find.

Then reboot and installed using the 'normal' environment.

Just as well SSD does not work with Linux (does not run garbage collection when
drive is not idle and the boot drive never is).

Now must spare some time to look for a replacement for Mageia as it will not let the new user sequence work as the passwd processing in mbse just blows up.

So two reason to look for another distro.

Dumb question Andrew. Do I go through the entire process when
upgrading MBSE? I haven't even tried yet because I'm afraid of
    breaking something. ;)

No it was not dumb, I have a problems doing so on my normal distro boot system as mentioned in eaarler posts that relate to not finding libiconv library elements. Possibly caused by allowing the system to remove orphaned packages when I should know better :).

I did a recovery from a backup that was around 9 months old that in turn borked.

Only solution was using a SSD boot partition that had the same system where I did NOT clear out the orphans etc although doing a search for libiconv.* find nothing - go figure !

I really must find another distro as Magiea has its own problems in getting a working new release out but in any event allowing a new user to create a password fails using Mageia and I have not found any solution.

A new distro sounds like a plan !

Back to your comment - doing a update is reasonably painless but I always make a copy of the ~/bin directory before doing the make install but so far have
    not had to use it.

Yes, you go through the same build process. Of course, it's recommended to backup your system first. The programs should automatically upgrade the data files for any changes in the newer version.

Okay, so build as per normal including the make install line, but
before I do all that make a quick backup of the mbse directory first.

If I've got it right I'll attempt this upgrade. ;) If it all fails
I can just restore the backup directory and continue on as if I was
    normal.

So as an aside because I'm running say debian and not a less well known distro I won't have any of the issues you experienced.
