• Help compiling on a Mac

From Allen Prunty@1:2320/100 to All on Sun Sep 4 17:32:29 2016
I'm trying to get MBSE to compile on a mac (using the unix shell) and I can
get the CONFIGURE to run... now when I try to do the make I am getting this error... Sourceforge shows it will work with mac as I see the icon there but see little help on how to make it work.

This is my first time in the foray of compiling anything would appreciate
    help.

Compiler is GCC : ............. yes

    Installation directories :

    Main directory : ........... /opt/mbse
    Owner and group : ........... mbse.bbs

Now type 'make' and as root 'make install'

    ORION:mbsebbs-1.0.6 AllenPrunty$ make

    MBSE_ROOT is not set!

    make: *** [all] Error 3

It is asking for the environment variable MBSE_ROOT to find the root
directory. It sysms odd, as it already knows that it will be /opt/mbse

If you enter export MBSE_ROOT=/opt/mbse all should be well.
Later on mbse will want to run as user "mbse" and group "bbs"

If it still needs the environment variable MBSE_ROOT then, you can set the
    value in the .profile file.

Don't look at me as an expert, I only ran a part of MBSE on Linux/Intel and
I have a demo system without bells, whistles and doors on a raspberry-Pi.

Andrew Leary is currently the most active Sysop where it concerns devopments,
such as keeping up with the features in Binkp.

MBSE was about the first package that supported IPv6 and although not yet
perfect, it was also the first supporting UTF-8.

The original developer Michiel Broek was aqainted with both IPv6 and UTF-8
from his professional job. Michiel has lost his interest in Fidonet and
is not available for questions with respect to MBSE.

I believe Vince Coen is now the custodian of the sources stored at
    Sourceforge.

It is a nice package, but the menu-driven configuration drives me crazy and
I am not interested BBS's, so that part of the package is useless overhead
    to me.

    Right, 1st things first.
    1. Install home brew
    2. install the source (you seem to have done that :)
    3. load up 2 ternimals and in one go to the directory containing the mbse source having unzip'd/tar'd it.

    4. On one terminal run less SETUP.sh
    5. on other term follow the instruction that relate to autorun [bash SETUP.sh ] - which fails on mine (El Capitan) but does install the services into /etc/services - so useful for something.

    6. Reading the SETUP (via 4) and using user & group set up set up first
    A. the bbs group
    B. the mbse user noting the details of set up via (4).
You will need to go into user set up twice (Advanced) to change group from staff to bbs.

Now following the instuctions in INSTALL and compile the package.
If you have any missing elements install them via home brew e.g., brew install packagename using a terminal.

That will do it for a wee while - I will look at continuing the install tomorrow and I seem to have hit a snag with wrong targets in the compile so must have a wrong setting somewhere.

    Vince,

If you can give me the necessary information, I should be able to add support for the Intel Macs to SETUP.sh. I unfortunately do not have access to such a machine.

For the most part, it should be a matter of adjusting for differences in where the Macs store things like the users, groups, and passwords.

It is going to be more than that -

Using passwd & group has to be replaced with a different call for each and every parameter requirement as the mac call only seems to take one param at a time and it goes to a different place but ends up in the same place i.e., /etc/passwd .

Next is that having homebrew installed is vital along with any required packages including GCC.

Location of the install is different as /opt is a link to the real /usr/local/Cellar and as that is on the 'boot' drive a user may well want it some where else (in my case /Users/mbse).

    My head hurts :)

Next one is the build fails due to bad target - need to have a close look at that as yesterday I did not spot the obvious !

    There is more :(

Better yet why can't they do the Mystic model and release a compiled version of
it? It tells me to edit a text file to remove **** after the password and I have no clue where that is in the text file. It's very complex and does not work.

Too many different systems to release compiled versions. It's not needed Allen. I followed the instructions on a linux box and it worked fine, I
also followed Robert Wolfe's page (when it was up) and go it working on the

OK. That can still be done; we just need a way to detect we are in an Intel Mac environment.

Next is that having homebrew installed is vital along with any

This requirement can be addressed in the README, or possibly by adding a check to the configure script.

Ok. You'll need to take the lead on diagnosing that, unless someone donates an

Having a compiled model will NOT support all users who use many different distro's and platforms as well as differing requirements just look at the needs
for internet only connects then and/or modem then some of the many other options including the location of the software and likewise the ftp files etc.

However if you can work a way of doing this I am sure we would love to supply mbse that way as I for one get bored having to config the package to suit my system requirements very time a useful new version is available.

Might work for Linux but OSX is Unix not Linux. Hoping I can get an alternative to Mystic for the Mac.

Considering he says it doesn't work yet why does that surprise you?

Hence if someone can compile it for OSX why not distrubute it. UNlike ten million flavors of Linux one compiled version for OSX should work nearly across

Having done that it still fails so in the interim I replaced the error msg with
setting the return to give Darwin but ..

Compiling it fails (have sent a msg to that effect I think), so need to look into that and see if I can spot the obvious but so far cannot see it.
Does produce a far number of warning so might be a conflict with missing headers etc. Will need to reread the required libs etc and see if they are installed.

No it would not suprise me if they aren't - then it will be a case of finding them in the brew system.

What did you do to get it to compile on a Pi as I have another
user who has tried it without success. Likewise on OSX

Just checking in on if you got OSX to work with it?

Did I nuts - fails during the compile but get similar for building the GnuCobol
    compiler as well.

I am NOT experienced with OSX and only got it to have a play as it is possible the only O/S I have never used. Last usage of Apple software and hardware was with Apple II with a North Star drives (floppy ?) around 1980.

That OS is so far removed rom the modern apple OS of today... but it was
    pretty nice for it's day.

Was not comparing it as it was core system and do not even remember what - for all I remember it might have been CPM.

Did however sell/distribute software, hardware, books and mags from the 70's thgat was for micros including Microsoft with Windows v1 & v2 (unuseable so not
sold) Msdos v1 and later and started distributing and fully supporting Windows v3.0 (limited sales to micro manu. only) v3.1 to all.

Apple I managed to keep clear of until I bought this 2009 Mac Pro and have only
upgraded Ram from 6Gb to 24Gb with the hope it would improve performance but currently only have working MySql server as my box has mariadb as distro standard which I do not like.

Do you by any chance know if that's an intel based or a motorola based CPU
mac? 2009 could go either way. The amazing thing about Macs that I have experienced is that they do have great longevity. Before I became disabled
and knew I had trouble I bought a really nice Mac Pro (the one that looks like the round trashcan) with the intel xenon processor. It will probably be the last new computer I will ever have.

Last October, my brother passed away, and I inherited his nice Dell laptop which I am currently running my BBS on.

I also have a couple of older e-machines that I'm going to load linux on, unfortunately they have been stored in a garage that was not climate control
so I'm not expecting them to work. If they work it will be great.
