    Hi Andrew!

(on Debian 8, where I've not been able to get a
    manual compile to work yet...),

That turned to be just the not so unusual case of missing some dev packages; once I installed the libbz2-dev and libz-dev packages, I had no problem doing the manual install and compile.

I'll be working on the configuration for it as I can.

The ./configure script should adjust for those libraries being missing and disable the use of compression. What changed in Debian 8 that broke the ./configure script?

A good question but now I can't find my notes for those build attempts and I thought I'd at least kept those configure and build logs. Saw the issue first with v1.05 but tried again with v1.04 & had the same errors come up during the build.
