  • Running FREEDOS on Raspbery Pi

    Hello All,

    I don't know how many people out there have a Raspberry Pi, but I thought I'd put this out there.

    I run Mystic BBS on my Raspberry Pi, and until now, I could not run dos
    doors. Most Sysops who run linux have to run dosemu to emulate dos. But dosemu has not been ported to run on the RPi yet. So, dosemu is not an
    option for RPi.

    But, I have discovered a new app called 8986tiny that is a dos emulator that runs freedos.... on the Raspberry Pi!

    If you run raspbian, you can simply do a 'apt-get install 8086tiny', then run it from anywhere as '8086tiny'

    Cool, thanks for sharing Darryl. I may yet pick your brains a bit (if that's ok) as I try and set up a test system on the Pi.

    How is the speed/performance? I was thinking about getting a Pi to play
    with, and one of the projects I was thinking of for 2015 was a 30 day DOS challenge. I was thinking about using DOSBOX since I could telnet out with
    an old comm app like Telix.

    if you install the PI with gentoo you can just emerge the abovc :=)

    So, dosemu is not an option for RPi.

    why not ?

    i think emulators should not be used in the PI for other reasons, but compileing it there should work fine, else make a bug report upstream

    I've been working on it a bunch more. I'm having some issues getting doors
    to work. Unlike dosemu, 8086tiny does not redirect com ports to a virtual port. This may, or may not be a problem. I cannot get lord to run, whether using BNU fossil, or strait non-fossil setup. It will flash the intro
    screen, then dump me off. I haven't figured out why yet.

    Speed is about average. It's like playing on a 286. One thing I discovered
    is that I cannot load high memory. I've tried freedos and MS-DOS 6.2.
    MS-DOS thinks that the hardware is NOT 386 architecture, so none of the high mem drivers will load.

    I have heard of Qemu being used to run DOS doors on a Pi. Haven't tried this myself yet.
