As the linux version of IREX seems to depend on older packages that are no longer available and therefore is difficult, if not impossible, to get working, has anyone ever tried successfully to get the DOS version of IREX working under dosemu or dosbox?

It's not "impossible" to get working under newer Linux distros. You
just use IP addresses instead of FQDNs.
